Program description:

Coast to Coast - 51 days Santiago to Rio or v.v. Join the Oasis Overland expedition truck through some of South America's most spectacular National Parks, the vast wilderness of Patagonia, the awe inspiring Iguazu Falls and Rio's Carnival or New Year's Eve celebrations!

Itinerary:

CHILE & ARGENTINA

Meeting the Oasis truck, crew and your new travel mates in Santiago, we head south to the deep blue lakes and towering mountains of Chile's Lake District.  From the outdoors centre of Pucon, we can go white water rafting, skiing, horse riding or for the adventurous, climb up Villarica Volcano.  Ascending the Andes via spectacular mountain passes, we arrive in Bariloche, Argentina, a top ski resort also great for hiking and for the nightlife!

Heading south, we enter the vast wilderness of Patagonia.  Our long drive is soon rewarded with the stupendous views at Los Glaciares National Park and one of the largest glaciers in the world, Perito Moreno Glacier.  Torres del Paine National Park, another area of outstanding beauty where huge granite cliffs dominate the landscape, can be explored on foot or horseback.  We continue south to Tierra del Fuego and the most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia, where we can venture out into the Beagle Channel surroun ded by snow clad peaks.  We now cross to the Atlantic coast of Patagonia and visit one of the marine sanctuaries to look for penguins, sea lions, sea elephants and if we're lucky, whales!

Traversing the vast Pampas grasslands, South America's cowboy country, we reach Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires.  There's plenty to do, museums, horse racing, football matches, shopping, tango dancing and restaurants that serve the best steak in the world!

URUGUAY & BRAZIL

In Uruguay we spend a couple of days in the lively town of Colonia before returning to Argentina to explore old Jesuit missions.  The Iguazu Falls form the natural border between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.  Higher than Niagara and wider than Victoria Falls, they are an awe-inspiring place to spend the next few days.  The surrounding lush tropical forest has many walking trails and abounds with parrots, toucans, woodpeckers and colourful plants or you can go rafting, take a helicopter flight or go mountain biking.

Next stop is Bonito where we can swim and snorkel in clear rivers and lakes and take spectacular walks in the mountainous forests, home to monkeys, alligators and anaconda.  We trek out into the vast wetlands of the Pantanal where over 600 species of birds and 350 kinds of fish (including piranha!) and an abundance of reptiles and mammals can be found.  We now return to the coast and the small picturesque town of Parati.  Cars have been banned from its cobbled streets so mountain bikes are a good way to get around or you can explore the islands of the coastline on a traditional schooner.

Our final drive brings us to the hedonistic playground of Rio de Janeiro where the folk are raring to party out of their minds and live purely for the moment!  Carnival and the New Year's Eve celebrations are always chaotic, crowded and fun!

Travel is in our fully equipped expedition truck and we use a mixture of camp sites and budget hotels. Each day is different - sometimes we may spend a few days driving from one place to the next, sometimes we spend 2 or 3 days in one place eg Iguazu Falls, so you have time to white water raft, horse-ride, mountain bike etc! All these kinds of activities are optional.

We provide cooking equipment, eating utensils and tents, all you need is your sleeping gear and personal stuff. The Oasis truck is fitted with comfortable coach seats and sliding windows so you can take plenty of photos!  Everyone in the group mucks in with shopping for food at local markets and stores, cooking over the camp stove and cleaning the truck. The trip is led by two Oasis crew all the way, a tour leader and driver and they'll help you get the most out of your trip. Don't worry about joining the trip on your own - many do and you'll soon find you have friends for life!
