Just three degrees south of the Equator is the 5,895m/19,340ft high, permanently snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. It offers one of the best opportunities in the world to climb a peak at high altitude without needing technical climbing ability. Any normally fit, healthy person prepared for some physical exertion and exercise should be able to complete the ascent to Gillman’s Point and then on to Uhuru Peak, the technical summit, which involves approximately 60 kilometres of walking in total, and no technical climbing.
The Marangu route is by far the most popular ascent and descent route, accounting for over 80% of all climbers, probably due to it being the oldest, cheapest, quickest and one of the “easiest” options.
The route follows a wide well maintained path as it steadily climbs the 70km trek distance in 5 days, 3.5 days going up and 1.5 days coming down. Accommodation is in a series of mountain hut/bunkhouses.
