Lake Hovsgol
Located in the northernmost province and known as “The Blue Pearl,” crystal clear Lake Hovsgol is the deepest in Central Asia (262 m) and the largest tributary stream of Lake Baikal of Russia. The lake is 1,645 m above sea level and is frozen from January until April or May. Two towns, Hatgal in the south and Hanh in the north within Lake Hovsgol National Park boundaries, are connected by a jeep trail skirting the lake’s eastern shore. A ferryboat operates between the two towns.
Darhad Valley is famous for the special breeds (of white) horse, big tailed sheep and enormous bulls.
Different ethnic groups live within the park: Halh, Buryat, Darhad and Tsaatan. Roughly 30 families of Tsaatan live in the taiga and forest steppe of the north and west retaining their ancestral culture based on shamanistic rituals and nomadic reindeer herding.
