Program description:

Volunteer in Malawi for four or eight weeks to help with wildlife research and hippo conservation projects that aim to prevent the extinction of the hippopotamus population along the southern shores of Lake Malawi; camping in friendly local villages, seeing spectacular landscapes and exploring the awesome national parks of Malawi, the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’.

This exciting Yomps hippo conservation expedition takes volunteers to south-eastern Africa to help to protect the endangered hippo population. For four or eight weeks you will travel for hundreds of miles along the southern shores of Lake Malawi, observing the fascinating hippo population and gathering wildlife research data that will help with their future conservation. The data you collect on this wildlife research project will help environmental organisations to gain a better understanding of troubles facing hippos. By understanding these problems, the correct conservation measures can be implemented to increase the hippo population; making our research all the more urgently required and your volunteering is all the more worthwhile. Factors including poaching and shooting (mostly due to crop conflicts) have contributed to the rapidly decreasing hippopotamus population of Lake Malawi. When volunteering in Malawi, you will also help projects that have been set up to resolve these conflicts. Whether you are looking for a career in wildlife research or conservation, or just want to go on the adventure of a lifetime; volunteering in Malawi will provide you experience and memories that will be with you forever, and help to prevent the extinction of the last remaining hippos.

Setting off from Palm Beach in the South, your adventure will take you and your team along one of the most stunning and breathtaking shorelines in the world (the southern coast of Lake Malawi) on a custom made, twenty-eight foot wooden boat, all the way to Senga Bay. Our overland support team will meet you at the resting points, where you come ashore each day to prepare the camp and meals for the evening, and spend the night under the stars. Volunteering in Malawi also gives you the chance to live in and explore a country filled with an abundance of wildlife and national parks. You will be able to stop at Liwonde National Park, go on safari to see a variety of wildlife that includes elephants and zebras, and relax at Lake Malawi’s many natural beauty spots. You will also increase hippo conservation awareness in local schools and be able to interact with the many welcoming communities of a country that is described as the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’ due to the friendliness of its people; making it a fantastic and worthwhile way to spend part of a gap year, sabbatical or holiday.
