Program description:

Project Galapagos works alongside the Charles Darwin Research Station, carrying out a tremendous variety of fieldwork. Venturers will have the opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the conservation effort in this unique and fragile environment.

1,000 Km offshore and straddling the Equator, the Galapagos Islands consist of 6 main islands, 12 smaller ones and over 40 islets, all of which are the tips of ocean-bed volcanoes. These islands have never been connected to the mainland and gradually, over the millennia, plants and animals have washed up on their shores. These species have grown apart from their mainland ancestors and are now unique to the islands, “endemic”. The greatest threat to endemic species, both plant and animal, is from introduced species which are often more vigorous and aggressive.

The Tasks:

Project Galapagos works alongside the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRC) and has two spheres of operation:

To take positive steps to help conserve the Galapagos Islands’ endangered species.

To provide teaching resources to local schools and to raise awareness of sustainable conservation practices.

Our project HQ is on Santa Cruz Island where there is a tremendous amount of fieldwork to be done: tasks vary from site surveys, identifying and counting native species and eradicating introduced plants. Our links with local schools strengthens awareness of conservation issues amongst primary school age children.

Weekends:

It’s not all work and no play: at weekends we explore offshore on day trips to neighbouring islands, each with its own unique species. There’s also time to explore more of Santa Cruz itself and spend a night in Puerto Ayora to sample the local nightlife!

Accommodation:

Self-supported camping during the project. On weekdays all meals are prepared and cooked in camp.

Onward Travel:

Post-project cruise or sail-trek to visit other parts of the Galapagos archipelago island hopping on 5 or 8 day cruises. Back on the mainland you can visit the Amazon and there are a host of other options within Ecuador and Peru.
