The world famous 628 mile Sydney Hobart race is renowned for being tough and is known as the Everest of recreational yacht races. Each year around 130 yachts, from state-of-the-art ocean racers to 38ft sloops, come from both hemispheres to do battle with the elements and the competition.
The race is a superb test of seamanship, skill, tactics and endurance and 100% commitment to the team and the yacht is essential. As with all events of this nature the sense of achievement upon completion is immense. This year's Team Flying Fish are racing a cutter rigged McIntyre 55 which was built for sailing the southern ocean and recently completed a circumnavigation via Cape Horn. The boat is strong fast and fully set up with Category 1 safety and communications equipment.
The key to success in an event like this is preparation and the Flying Fish package is designed to ensure that the crew and the boat are fully prepared for the challenge. Our three week package begins with a week of skills and drills on Sydney harbour. This will focus on yacht preparation, spinnaker handling and race role allocation. Week two includes a 2 day YA Safety and Sea Survival course followed by a 200 nm offshore qualifying passage. (Race organisers, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, stipulate that all crews in the Rolex Sydney Hobart race must have completed an offshore qualifying passage on board the race yacht and that 50% of the crew must have completed the YA sea survival course). Next there are a couple of days off for Christmas and its up early on Boxing day for the start.
The race start on Sydney Harbour is spectacular! After the start the fleet sails out into the Tasman Sea searching for the warm south going current and down the south-east coast of mainland Australia. Then out across the Bass Strait and down the beautiful east coast of Tasmania. At Tasman Island the fleet turns right into Storm Bay for the final sail up the Derwent River to the finish line at Constitution Dock and a magnificent welcome in the historic port of Hobart.
We hope to arrive in Hobart in good time for the magnificent New Years Eve celebrations and to enjoy the Tasmanian Food and Wine show.
