Undertake an adventure challenge as part of a Raleigh expedition and you could be trekking through tropical forests in Costa Rica, diving the coral reefs in Borneo, or scaling the heights of the Western Ghats in India.
Raleigh is a well-established charity with over 24 years experience providing adventure and challenge expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages, especially young people.
Whether part of your summer vacation, career break or gap year, Raleigh’s four week adventure challenge is a worthwhile and unforgettable experience.
Trek and dive in Borneo
Borneo offers a unique three stage challenge – you’ll have the opportunity to learn, or further progress, your diving skills to PADI Open Water Certificate or Advanced standard and then to use them to contribute to an established reef conservation project in the Tanku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. From sea level, we take you trail blazing through the Crocker National Park and to the heights of South East Asia’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu, an exhilarating climb through five temperate zones, from dense rainforest to barren alpine landscapes.
Trek Costa Rica
Rise to the challenge of extended treks through lowland tropical forests to mountain peaks and beaches. Slay the beast of the 270km Dragon trek and experience Costa Rica’s friendly culture as villages welcome you to stay at the end of a long day. Alternatively, choose the 17 day Coast to Coast trek, taking in rainforest, rivers and mountains on your route from the Pacific to the Caribbean.
Trek and canoe in India
A trekking and canoeing exploration will take place in some of the last undisturbed tracts of the South Western Ghats in the west of Tamil Nadu, along the border with Kerala.
The remote 19-day route covers the breath-taking scenery of the Nilgiris, which reach over 2,600m in altitude, and covers a range of terrain, including Montane rainforest, grasslands, tropical evergreen forest and shrub lands interspersed with sholas and tea plantations. You will trek and canoe, carrying all equipment and food and camp overnight in the wilderness.
Raleigh runs expeditions for 10 to 4 weeks throughout the year to Borneo, Costa Rica & Nicaragua and India. If you have more time to spare, combine sustainable community and environmental projects with the adventure challenge.
If you are aged 17-24, join an expedition as a venturer. Those aged 25+ can apply as volunteer managers to help lead and facilitate the expeditions for young people (full training is given therefore commitment is approximately 8 to 13 weeks). Roles include project managers, medics, logistics managers, drivers, communications officer, finance managers, administrators and photographers.

Raleigh has a permanent field base in each expedition country enabling us to build long-term partnerships with the government, NGOs and local communities and thus deliver projects that meet a genuine need and are sustainable. Thanks to our partnerships we often work in national parks and areas which other tourists don’t have access to.
Safety permeates everything we do and we have represented the industry in developing safety standards.
You will be joining volunteers from different lifestages and backgrounds, including young people from the the host country for a true exchange of cultures.
Working in small teams in a new environment, you will develop key life skills which will enhance both your professional and educational prospects.
The friends, memories, experience and skills you'll take away from a Raleigh expedition will stay with you for life. You will be joining a network of 30,000 people with similar attitudes and outlooks, keen to share their stories and keep the Raleigh spirit going.

As a registered charity, we are dependent on fundraising activities to cover the cost of running our overseas projects and expeditions. In addition, we work in partnership with youth agencies to give disadvantaged young people the opportunity to develop skills and benefit from the Raleigh experience.

Volunteer managers aged 25+:
5 week expedition (plus 2-3 weeks training) £1,350
10 week expedition (plus 3 weeks training) £1,950
Your fundraising target includes your travel and medical insurance, training, pre-departure support, all food and accommodation, specialist equipment and in-country transport. You will need to organise your flight independently.
