Program description:

In the surroundings of breathtaking volcanic landscapes and cloud-and rainforests, you will be trained to plan and execute a tropical research expedition in Nicaragua. You will be exploring a truly exciting region of Nicaragua, where the flora and fauna of North and South America converge.

You will learn how to plan all elements of an expedition, developing skills in devising routes and itineraries, buying equipment and supplies, assessing risk, managing health and safety issues, navigating with GPS systems and communicating using VHF radio.

You will gain skills in leadership and decision-making whilst undertaking rapid biodiversity assessment in remote inaccessible regions. Your hard work will contribute to identifying sites for future conservation initiatives.

BTEC Expedition Management (biodiversity research)The expedition is focused around Frontier’s unique BTEC Advanced Certificate Level 3 Expedition Management (biodiversity research) syllabus.  This qualification has been devised by Frontier staff and approved for certification by the awarding body, Edexcel.  The qualification consists of four main units, and it is around these that the programme will be run. The units are Expedition Planning and Preparation, Expedition Skills, Team Leadership (expeditions), and  Rapid Biodiversity Assessment.The qualification and the experience aims to provide participants with the practical skills to plan and execute a biodiversity research expedition.
