|
Previously inaccessible because of war, political instability and human rights issues, the threatened rainforests of Cambodia have recently emerge as some of the most exciting habitats in the world to be explored. These forest and wetland habitats support a huge diversity of flora and fauna including approximately 120 mammals, 540 bird, over 80 reptile and more than 2,300 species of vascular plants. Also, a number of endangered species, which are elsewhere extinct, are thought to be hidden in the more remote habitats, including elephants, tigers, leopards, rhinos, gibbons, bats and crocodiles.
As the human population of Cambodia increases and its economy develops, greater demands are being placed on the country’s natural resources.
While a number of national parks have been established, illegal logging provides much-needed income in a very poor country, so it is a practice that is very difficult to curb. The logging frenzy has led to a 50% reduction in the country’s forest coverage in the last 40 years.
Our work programme has been initiated in direct response to the urgent need, identified by Cambodian scientists, for the study and protection of the remaining tropical forests.
As a volunteer you will discover their biological importance and through your work we will be able to provide the basis for sustainable and adequate natural resource management and protection strategies.

Gain a BTEC in Tropical Habitat Conservation.Participants for the full 10 week phase can qualify for an internationally-recognised vocational BTEC Advanced Diploma in Tropical Habitat Conservation. This is the equivalent of an A-Level and will be completed largely in the field.Written by Frontier and approved for certification by the awarding body Edexcel, the syllabus is built around the existing work programmes and methodologies. During your expedition you will cover environmental good practice; working effectively; monitoring and reporting on environmental change; and preparing, conducting and reporting on field surveys.
