Program description:

Volunteer in Sri Lanka by teaching English, Teaching English to young Buddhist monks, working in orphanages, helping rural women or working in cultural centers. Participate in a Mini-Adventure program.

TEACH ENGLISH:

Rich in natural beauty and culture, but economically and educationally poor, Sri Lanka is striving to become an accessible paradise for all foreigners in the near future. Sri Lankans are a people of great hope and have been dreaming of a prosperous life. Everyone here is searching for a chance to become more literate and able to participate in modern technological trends. This means everyone wants to learn English.

Teaching English in Sri Lanka is very challenging. In collaboration with local schools, volunteers in the Sri Lanka project offer English teaching programs in Embilipitiya - a rural town located 180 km from the capital city of Sri Lanka, where the youths have been seeking help to improve their knowledge of English in order to use it in the job market.

Our local partners have established English schools in rural areas of Sri Lanka in order to provide the much needed service. When teaching English in the Sri Lanka volunteer project, the volunteer will teach 2 ½- 6 year old children. Teaching these children can be a fun experience, where you can use your one techniques and styles of teaching English (using gestures, cards, art, music, singing, etc.). If you have specialized experience, you can also teach mathematics, and physical education. In order to be a teacher, you should have good experience in teaching English. However, if you are not entirely confident in your personal teaching abilities, you can work as an assistant teacher.

TEACH ENGLISH TO YOUNG BUDDHIST MONKS:

Pirivena is the traditional name of the temple school where young monks are studying. Most of the time, volunteers will teach monks ages 8 to 21 years old. Teaching projects are run by the local partner of Global Crossroad, a grassroots cooperation that develops self-reliance in even the neediest of Sri Lankans monks. Volunteers working on the project here will receive a remarkable, unique experience, as they are enjoying a village life, teaching English, playing games with the monks, and living with local families. Teaching English to young monks give you a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself inside the amazing Buddhist culture, teachings, and philosophies - volunteers always find this project interesting and exciting. The monks' way of life is so amazingly different for most volunteers, and teaching them will allow volunteers to appreciate all the fascinating cultures that exist around the world.

WORK IN ORPHANAGES:

If you would like to make a difference in the world and touch the hearts of homeless children, volunteering in Sri Lanka is the perfect option for you. These orphanages have been running by our local partners organizations of Sri Lanka for several years. In each project 15 children have been accommodating with the age of 4-10. In Sri Lanka, many orphanages are crowded with helpless children, who are displaced, abandoned, and abused, and Global Crossroad offers a program to aid these needy, innocent youths. Here, just by volunteering, teaching the children English, or simply being their friend, you can give these children something that they have never known before - hope.

With the help of Global Crossroad, you can lead these children in various activities - from school lessons to games. Most of the time, you will stay with them as a family member. This Sri Lanka volunteer program is designed to place you here, as you take the children's hands, and guide them in the proper direction - giving them a future that they never expected before. Although this is not necessarily a teaching placement, you can teach them English during your stay. Other than teaching, a volunteer is expected to engage in educational activities and games with these orphans. Also, you may be asked to help them with various health or sanitation issues.

MINI-ADVENTURE IN SRI LANKA:

The Sri-Lanka mini-adventure program is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers who wish to broaden their horizons even more through their volunteer work. Here, Asia Volunteers organizes a special program that gives participants the opportunity to visit the finest and most breathtaking sites of Sri-Lanka, while they help the local people through their volunteer work. For the two weeks the volunteers are involved in the Sri-Lanka mini-adventure program, they may encounter the challenges and issues that face the community - albeit by working with orphans, teaching the locals English, or helping with field work. Mostly, the Sri-Lanka mini-adventure program aims to help orphaned children - giving them much needed hope and guidance. Volunteers will engage in various children supporting activities like teaching, dancing, and drawing. But after a few days of working with the poor children, or any other activity that interests the volunteer, Asia volunteers will take volunteers on a Sri-Lanka tour and show them some of the popular tourist destinations of Sri-Lanka. The aim of our mini-adventure, as always, is to enrich your volunteering experience by visiting some of cultural wonders that make up Sri-Lanka.
