Program description:

"Everyone can benefit somehow from doing this kind of humanitarian work, and time spent helping local communities and promoting intercultural harmony is never wasted. In addition, this organisation focuses a great deal on personal development and wellbeing of the volunteers themselves, which enormously increases the personal growth, satisfaction levels and productivity of everyone involved. It's really a win-win situation."

Kate Brothers, Communications Officer volunteer, Malaysia expedition

Raleigh International is an educational charity which provides adventure and challenge expeditions to people of all ages. Our 10 to 4 week expeditions are designed to develop skills in young people aged 17-24 to give them a rewarding and wide-ranging experience.

Those aged 25+ can apply as volunteer managers, to either be based on project sites or at field base to help run these expeditions and in doing so, make a difference to the lives of young people and local communities.

Project based volunteer managers

You will lead a specific project for the duration of the expedition. Working with a team of 10-15 young people, you will be involved with either an environmental, community or adventure project for the entire 10 weeks.

You will have dual responsibility - the physical completion of the project and facilitating the learning and development of individuals and the group. The projects are in remote locations and you will be living and working with the local communities.

Raleigh's community projects are helping to improve the health and daily lives of villagers in cut off communities by building schools and water systems. Environmental projects are concentrated in the world renowed Danum Valley or remote Imbak Canyon to help preserve these amazing habitats. The adventure challenge puts venturers to the test as they trek, dive and take on the highest mountain in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu.

Field based volunteer managers

'Field base' is the organisational hub from where up to ten volunteer managers on each expedition jointly support the smooth running of the programme, together with Raleigh's Country Director. You will be involved in the day to day running of the expedition and provide a support role to project sites.

Although these roles are field based, you will either get the opportunity to visit some project sites or have the opportunity to work on a project site.

Roles on expedition include project managers, medics, logistics managers, drivers, communications officer, finance managers, administrators, photographers, artists.

Make a genuine difference, inspire young people and experience Malaysian community life.

Raleigh International also runs expeditions to India, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Raleigh International also runs expeditions to India, Costa Rica and Nicaragua throughout the year.
