For a truly moving and possibly even life changing experience, and to give another dimension to your understanding of Africa and its peoples, join the cultural project as an add-on- to you conservation placement. When grappling with the challenges facing conservation in modern day Africa, one needs to be exposed to and to try and gain an understanding of the challenges that African people face every day. Situated almost within sight of the Kruger National Park, the project is based in the Acorn Hoek Community. Students live in a pristine environment surrounded by Africa’s big 5, going in each day to one of 4 schools in the community.
Many people are under the wrong impression that to teach in a school one has to have a teaching background. The reality in Africa is that with a student’s western level of education, they are more than qualified to teach. Through your work and exposure to African children at the school you will gain a real insight into their lives and culture. This experience is always a moving one.
In line with conservation principles, ACE students on this project teach specifically environmental education. A full environmental education syllabus has been developed. The syllabus is aimed at primary school children and is easily grasped, however, at the end of each day, the following day’s lessons are run though and prepared with the aid of competent and qualified co-ordinators.
A Typical Day on the Cultural Project.
7am Wake up at the bush-camp set within the well known Thorney Bush Game Reserve.
7 – 7.45 Breakfast and preparing for the day.
8am Your day at school begins by being part of the teachers morning meeting.
8.30 – 2pm Lessons of 60 minutes with 10-minute breaks in between each half hour take up the bulk of the day. There is a lunch break, which will be taken at the school.
2.pm – 4.pm Rest time back at the bush camp.
4.pm Discussions of the past day and preparations for the next day.
Evenings are spent around an open fire and having dinner.
The above programme is followed from Monday until Thursday. Friday students stop teaching by 12.00pm. They are taken in to the local town where Internet, post and shop facilities are available. Saturdays are outside activity days, with students being given the opportunity to make the most of what the area has to offer. Some of these options could include a trip to the Kruger National Park, visiting surrounding rehabilitation and animal breeding centres, and for the thrill seeker, white water rafting, microlighting, horse riding and abseiling. Sunday is a day of leisure. A huge pool at the bush camp as well as satellite television help students unwind after a hectic week and prepare for the week to come.
Please note this is NOT a staged project by paid performers for the benefit of tourists – it is a genuine, working community trying to survive the harsh Africa of today and to understand a continually changing world.
