Program description:

This Global Vision project offers you the chance to live and travel in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of Madagascar, working hands-on with village communities, Malagasy biologists and an international team of group leaders.  This programme focuses sensitively on local needs, human and otherwise, with diverse project work ranging from field studies on endangered species to digging wells and pits, to help protect local people from diseases such as cholera. This is an invaluable opportunity to further a career in development and/or conservation work.

Activities greatly depending on the time of year, programmes and schedules of coordinators. Projects for the next year include censuses of lemurs and birds in fragmented forest areas, conservation of loggerhead turtles, building wells, latrines, pharmacies and schools.

LOCATION:

The training takes place in Fort Dauphin and volunteers work on a number of different projects in South East Madagascar.

FIELD CONDITIONS: You will be living under canvas for the duration of the scheme. Food is simple but nutritionally balanced. You will be expected to use ‘long drop’ toilets, and hot water showers are a rare luxury! Electricity is available in the town of Fort Dauphin but during field work in rural villages there is none. Volunteers should be prepared for physical work, uncomfortable journeys, and long walks to reach remote project sites! The work and lifestyle is challenging but incomparably rewarding, both as part of a team and part of an interface with the local community and colourful Malagasy culture.
