Program description: |
 |
|
India, the 7th largest country in the world is a new and exciting destination for Raleigh having started this year and with the first India expedition beginning in February. India encompasses a multitude of traditions, culture and history in some of the most bio diverse regions across the world. Expeditions to India will take you across the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu which are all excellent environments for exploring the amazing and beautiful national parks, getting involved with and helping the local community and rising to the physical adventure challenges of taking on mountainous terrain.
The unique benefit of our five week expedition is the choice our venturers or volunteer managers have between choosing either a three week community phase or a three week environmental phase after the initial compulsory one week induction. Then, participants are able to end their expedition with the perfect finale of an adventure phase which has you challenging both your mental and physical stamina in situations which test your leadership and teamwork skills with the added luxury of remarkable surroundings.
A taste of expedition life in India:
Community project
The community phase allows participants to contribute to development projects in some of the most rural areas in India, where almost 80 percent of India's poor live. You will be helping us to build long term partnerships through an integrated building programme for health centres and schools whilst living alongside families in the community and gaining a unique insight into the lives of people who live in such a culturally different environment.
Environmental project
The environmental phase is in partnership with the Ministy of Envrionment and Forest. You will be working in some of the country's amazing national parks which have some of the world's most rarely seen habitats and wildlife, as well as some more familiar creatures because these parks are also host to wildlife sanctuaries including elephant and tiger reserves. Your role will be to help the Parks' rangers with the conservation of these diverse habitats through scientific monitoring and hands on renovation or construction work which are all vital in protecting the natural resources. You will find the work and environment challenging in the extreme but equally, if not more rewarding.
Team-based adventure project
A trekking and canoeing exploration will take place in some of the last undisturbed tracts of the South Western Ghats in the west of Tamil Nadu, along the border with Kerala.
The remote route covers the breath-taking scenery of the Nilgiris, which reach over 2,600m in altitude, and covers a range of terrain, including Montane rainforest, grasslands, tropical evergreen forest and shrublands interspersed with sholas and tea plantations. Kerala’s chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lie parallel to the Arabian Sea coast and includes five large lakes linked which extend across nearly half the length of the state. You will trek and canoe carrying all equipment and food and camp overnight in the wilderness.
Raleigh International also runs expeditions to India for 4-10 weeks throughout the year. If you are aged 17-24, join an expedition as a venturer. Those aged 25+ can apply as volunteer managers to help lead and facilitate the expeditions for young people (full training is given therefore commitment is approximately 8 to 13 weeks). Roles include project managers, medics, logistics managers, drivers, communications officer, finance managers, administrators and photographers.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
Raleigh International has a permanent field base in each expedition country enabling us to build long-term partnerships with the government, NGOs and local communities and thus deliver projects that meet a genuine need and are sustainable. Thanks to our partnerships we often work in national parks and areas which other tourists don’t have access to.
Safety permeates everything we do and we have represented the industry in developing safety standards.
You will be joining volunteers from different lifestages and backgrounds, including young people from the the host country for a true exchange of cultures.
Working in small teams in a new environment, you will develop key life skills which will enhance both your professional and educational prospects.
The friends, memories, experience and skills you'll take away from a Raleigh expedition will stay with you for life. You will be joining a network of 30,000 people with similar attitudes and outlooks, keen to share their stories and keep the Raleigh spirit going.
