Program description: |
 |
|
This is an exciting new destination for Raleigh International encompassing some of the world's most biodiverse regions with a multitude of traditions, culture and history. We will be working in the 3 southern states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. These areas cover a range of landscapes including costa plains, rainforest and the semi arid Deccan Plateau.
Raleigh International is a well-established charity with 23 years experience in providing adventure and challenge expeditions. Joining an expedition will give you the opportunity to live and work with groups of volunteers from all backgrounds, nationalities and lifestages, including those from the host country. You will be completing sustainable community and environmental projects, plus an adventure challenge.
Here is an idea of the types of projects you could be completing on expedition:
Raleigh is committed to working in partnership with grass root and international organisations to achieve worthwhile and genuine projects. You could be working with UNICEF and NESA India on a community project. NESA is an organisation committed to the rights of underprivileged young people. You will be living and working alongside the local people for a true exchange of cultures and traditions.
The environmental projects could be based in the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve located in the Western Ghats. An area of impressive and varied terrain, it is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. The Silent Valley is one of the most remote areas and you could be working with local wildlife rangers to help plan trails.
The adventure challenge will test you both physically and mentally as you could be scaling the heights of the Western Ghats which rise to over 2,600m.
An expedition with Raleigh is unique and flexible giving you the choice of combining 3 distinct phases of community, environmental, or adventure projects for a full expedition of 10 weeks. If you are short of time, choose from our 4 week (1 phase) or 7 week (2 phases) expeditions.
Our 5 week expedition gives you the option of either a community or environment project, plus a team-based adventure challenge.
If you are aged 17-24, join an expedition and be part of the first Raleigh team to take on incredible India.
Those aged 25+, can join as volunteer managers to help lead and facilitate the expeditions (full training is given therefore commitment is approximately 7-13 weeks). Volunteer manager roles include: project managers, logistics managers, drivers, medics, administrators, finance managers, communication officers, interpreter, photographers.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
Raleigh International has a permanent field base in each expedition country enabling us to build long-term partnerships with the government, NGOs and local communities and thus deliver projects that meet a genuine need and are sustainable. Thanks to our partnerships we often work in national parks and areas which other tourists don’t have access to.
Safety permeates everything we do and we have represented the industry in developing safety standards.
You will be joining volunteers from different lifestages and backgrounds, including young people from the the host country for a true exchange of cultures.
Working in small teams in a new environment, you will develop key life skills which will enhance both your professional and educational prospects.
The friends, memories, experience and skills you'll take away from a Raleigh expedition will stay with you for life. You will be joining a network of 30,000 people with similar attitudes and outlooks, keen to share their stories and keep the Raleigh spirit going.
