Program description:

Amakhala is a ‘Big 5’ reserve based in a malaria free zone in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. At present, the reserve is undertaking a conservation initiative to re-introduce animals back to the area. Volunteers will partake in conservation projects designed to help the game rangers develop the reserve and assist with animal relocation programmes.

Volunteers will assist in monitoring and managing wildlife within the reserve. Involvement will include tracking lions and other animals with a telemetry device. This is valuable fieldwork for the Amakhala conservation centre’s ongoing research on animal behaviour.

Shumba volunteers will also have the chance to assist on various conservation projects and will always be involved when exciting opportunities arise. This could include animal relocations or assist feeding the big cats at Born Free.

There are a host of other activities for volunteers to get involved in and under the direction of the project leader you may assist with alien vegetation management, building bird hides, fence patrols, wetland rehabilitation and local community projects. You will also be taught additional skills including basic astronomy and navigation, target shooting, medicinal use of plants and wildlife tracking.

A designated sector of the reserve has been allocated for trails. Shumba volunteers will be taken on game walks here and will also be used for the overnight camping & bush survival experience.
