If you're looking for a real Australian experience and to truly immerse yourself in the Australian culture and lifestyle, then this is the program for you!
The Rural Work and Travel program is for people who are keen to experience Australia and support their travels around the country by working in various temporary jobs in the rural field. The programme normally commences with a 5 day course at a Jillaroo and Jackaroo school in NSW. The school is open all year round. At the end of the course, you will receive a letter of reference from the providers.
The Programme includes a guaranteed job, but participants MAY or MAY NOT go straight into work after completion of the course. We have many contacts with farmers and contractors all around NSW who are looking for employees. More often than not, these farmers will want some of the school graduates and will arrange to pick up the graduates on the weekend after completion of the course in order to commence work on the Monday. They also have sheep and cattle stations which regularly take school participants. You need to be a hard worker and a keen learner.
Participants will receive a list of farms around the country that you will be able to contact after your initial job. It will be up to you to phone these farmers and state your interest in working for them.
The five day course is basically your ticket into working in the rural field as most farmers will not employ you without such training, or reference from such a well established school. The school however have stated that if the student is dedicated then they will have no trouble finding work. This means that you need to be proactive and independent with your job search.
Who can take part in this program? The program is aimed at people who are aged between 18 and 30 that are able to obtain an eligible visa to work in Australia.
What types of jobs will there be? There are hundreds of jobs out there! Here are some examples
Fruit picking / Vegetable picking / Farm and station work / Feeding animals / Crop harvesting / Fencing / General Repairs at a farm / Gardening / Farm Nanny
All jobs will vary in their wages. You will be told how much you will be earning per hour by the farmer before you commence working. Sometimes accommodation is provided at the farm where you will be working. Depending on the season, some fruit pickers and farm workers can make anything between A$500- A$1000 per week! The harder you work the more you will earn!
