Program description: |
 |
|
This programme is perfect for anyone wishing to combine in-depth study of the French language with an exploration of Cannes and French culture. It provides a solid grounding in the core skills of the French language.
An ideal course choice for Gap year students and Graduates looking to enhance their CV’s, develop a new life skill and gain first hand experience of living for several months in France.
French lessons per week : 21
Class size : 10/14 people
Minutes per lesson : 55
Minimum age :16
Course Duration : 8wks, 12 wks, 16wks or 20wks
The course ensures rapid acquisition and long-term retention of key language skills and also covers a range of topics on today's France(cultural, social and economic).
Oral and written skills are developed and enhanced through out these long term courses.
It is aimed at Beginners to Low Intermediate abilities, who want to see serious linguistic improvement and are aiming to achieve fluency over a number of months.
Classes are then held from Monday to Friday each week. The college is closed for the Christmas and Easter holiday period, however accommodation can be reserved for students (and has to be paid for) over these periods if applicable to your programme dates. Once you have successfully completed your course you will receive a college certificate attesting to your level of proficiency in the French language, this will include the duration of course attended.
Emily Reed (18) spent 12 weeks on a Academic Year Course in Cannes from February to May with CESA, hear what Emily has to say about the 3 months she spent in Cannes:
“The course looked great from the website and the brochure but I knew people who had done similar courses and had been misled by other companies’ websites and I was just hoping it would all work out well. It did! I was expecting small, well-tailored classes and a very international mix of students.
The whole experience was 100 times better than I expected. My expectations in terms of classes were met. It was true that the College had a good International mix. I was pleased that most people were my age group. The college food was excellent too, much better than the school dinners I had expected!.
The small class size was excellent, it meant the teacher could adapt the lessons to suit our individual needs. I particularly enjoyed my lessons in the first term. There were only five of us, so we could all take part in lively discussions and we got to watch some French stand up comedy too. I really enjoyed those lessons, I was never bored. Lessons in the second term were much harder (I was promoted to the top class) but there was a good atmosphere in the class, our teacher was such a laugh.
The college campus is beautiful, its location is great, just across the round from the beach and its proximity to the railway line was not an issue. I never heard the trains at night. Its only 10 minutes walk into the centre of Cannes. I felt immediately at home in the college, even though it was my first time away from home. Everyone’s so friendly, students, teachers, staff, dinner ladies. Everyone calls each other “tu”.
The best parts of the course were, making so many good friends. I went travelling around Europe with two American girls I became friends with in Cannes after the course had finished and in so many countries we were able to visit friends we had met at the College. I also loved being able to go to the beach after class and because there is such a friendly atmosphere there are always people around to chat to, play ping-pong with or throw a Frisbee around with.
There was not one single thing about the whole experience I didn’t enjoy. Therefore the worst things I can some up with are saying goodbye to friends at the end.
There was a good balance between work and play. I had three hours of class a day, but could have done more if I wanted. The college organises lots of activities and you can pick and choose if you want to do any of the outings I went to visit some hilltop villages. I enjoyed the organised sports events like football matches and ping-pong tournaments. The special evenings held in the foyer are great too, from dances to crepes evenings. The other students were great. Going on my own was no problem; within 3 hrs of being there I was in a pub with two girls who are still two of my closest friends. Almost everyone speaks English (but not necessarily as their first language) and of course everyone speaks French so communicating with people from other countries is not a problem. Some students are involved in the running of the College (e.g. working in the foyer, serving brunch etc.) which reflects the easy and relaxed staff-student relationship. Everybody here really wants to be there doing what they do so it’s such a great atmosphere.
Cannes is a good sized town for doing a course in as you can walk most places. There are plenty of expensive restaurants and clubs (Baoli for one, where my friend met Jude Law during the film festival) which are fu once in a while, but it’s just as easy to go out for a pint and there are some really fantastic restaurants which aren’t expensive. I would recommend going out of season to experience the ‘real Cannes’. The film festival was fun, and we all got passes to see films and see some in the Palais, but it is not the real Cannes. The town is full of tourists and the whole ambience changes. Two things I would say are that taxis are really expensive and girls get a lot of attention from French guys so walking home along the beach isn’t a good idea unless in a big group. Generally though it’s a great, safe place.
Social life was excellent. Everyone could hang out in the foyer and the courtyard until about 11pm, and then people would go out on any night of the week. We also organised some foyer parties ourselves. Midnight blues is fun on a Thursday (ladies night) and there is live music on Sundays at Morrison’s. There is a pub and a smarter lounge bar next door. Expensive places like Baoli, Palm Beach, Caliente etc are fun places but extremely pricey and you have to be smartly dressed to get in (i.e. Dress and heals or suit). We all loved Quays, the Irish pub by the Old port, there was always college students in there so you could pop in and there would be people you know. We also became friends with the bar staff and some of the regulars. During the day I used the train to explore other towns along the coast. Bealieu-sur-mer is beautiful and so is Nice. Everybody went to the beach a lot and students were always in the foyer or courtyard playing cards, reading newspapers etc. Sundays could be a bit dull if you couldn’t be outside though as you can’t travel anywhere and all the shops, museums etc are shut. We organised some excursions ourselves including a trip to the carnival in Nice, the quirky lemon festival in Menton and Monaco with its beautiful aquarium.
I was staying in a single room in the College. I would recommend this over staying with a family because otherwise you have to leave the campus at 11pm, even if there is a party or something. It was great living along the corridor from my friends and being so close to the classrooms meant getting up later. I love d being on campus as my window looked onto the courtyard so I could see if anything fun was going on in the foyer. In fact my view was incredible, a palm tree, the courtyard and the beach. My room was comfortable modern and both my room and the bathroom area were kept spotless by the cleaning ladies.
CESA`s advice was excellent. I was originally going to go for Paris but CESA advised me that most students there were not really my age group. What CESA told me about the College in Cannes was accurate and helpful. CESA were efficient and I would use them again, unlike my friends who were misled by other companies. Anyone aged 17 to 25 go to Cannes. Your French will improve; you will make friends for life and have so much fun! I’m so glad I went, there is no way I could write down all the great memories I have.
I would certainly recommend the course in Cannes to others. My months spent in Cannes were the best of my life. Favourite memories include: playing football on the beach, poker in the foyer, fancy dress parties in the foyer, going out for meals on the Suquet, picnics on the terrace, admiring stunning views when exploring the coasts, working at a party thrown by Sharon Stone during the film festival, countless evenings spent laughing and singing in Quays, getting buried in the sand during a party on the beach, watching and celebrating football matches in Quays, doing the YMCA in midnight blues, getting to grips with French hip-hop, to name just a few !”
