Cusco, the base for our Programmes, is a small city where, after the first few days, you will start recognizing your neighbours and making friends for life. Cusco is a unique city. Almost everyone who comes to the city is captivated by its history, its stunning setting 11,000 feet (3400m) up in the verdant Andes, and the simple warmth and generosity of its people. Not surprisingly, many people who planned to come to Cusco for a short visit have extended their stays by days, months, and even years. The "Lost City of the Inkas”, Machu Picchu, and the magnificent Sacred Valley which houses it, are only a small part of Cusco’s attractions.
What makes this Volunteer Project so very different is that roughly half of the income from their associated Spanish School is used to support Nuevo dia Del Cusco-Peru. Nuevo Dia del Cusco-Peru is a foundation established in 2000 that provides education, food and emotional support for underprivileged children in the Cusco area. The foundation, The Nuevo Dia del Cusco Youth Program, consists of classes and workshops for a group of Peruvian young people who come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. Very commonly and quite unfortunately, this also means a background of alcoholism and violence.
Nuevo Dia del Cusco provides our group of young people with daily English classes and weekly workshops to develop self-confidence, self-esteem, and general interpersonal skills. It also provides a safe space for the young people to connect, be supported and have a healthy meal.
Due to the economic situation in Peru, Peruvian workers are often displaced by volunteer workers for lack of funding. Many non-profit organizations discontinue hiring their regular workers because it costs less to use volunteers. To avoid this, the project discourages giving volunteers any work that can be done by paid local people. The volunteers for this project are “support” staff and are here to help as well as to learn.
“We believe that one way to further communication and understanding in our world is to learn about each other, in a deeper and more profound way.” Being a volunteer at this amazing project is one way to expand your horizons!
The aim of the Programme for the students is:
-to provide a resource so that the young people could learn English for three years. This would possibly enable them to enter the University system or the work force.
-to provide emotional support in order to develop self esteem.
The preparation period for the exams is anywhere from three months to three years and requires extensive academic support. Young people from middle and upper class families often go to private academies and institutes where they prepare intensively for the exams. Our Youth Programme consists of daily English classes of eight students on each section and Saturday morning workshops to build self confidence and communication skills. On the basic needs level, our program will also provide snacks on a daily basis to our students.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
We offer many opportunities to volunteer. Perhaps you could:
- teach English classes (qualified Teacher Status would be useful – minimum 1 month commitment)
- assist in the teaching of English - (you don't have to be a qualified teacher)
- assist the students with their homework
- design new projects for our young people - extra-curricular, vocational, special skills
- help in the office with publicity and/or various administrative tasks.
Whatever your talents or experiences, we are sure that you have something to offer to us!
We are looking for self-directed, mature and motivated individuals who would like to spend a period of volunteering at the Foundation. Perhaps you could combine this as part of your Gap Travels. There is no minimum of time that you can spend with us (except for English Teachers), although you and the programme would gain more benefit if you can stay for at least a week.
- We also welcome English teachers who can commit to a minimum period of 3 months.
- All Nationalities are welcome; all ages - everyone who feels that they have something to offer.
If you are looking for other type of volunteer opportunity that cannot be offered within the School or Foundation, it can probably be arranged for you with an NGO in the locality. For example:
- Handicapped children
- Street children/orphanages
- Economic Development
- Environmental
Perhaps you want to learn (or brush up on your Spanish) - you can combine learning Spanish with your Volunteer experience. The Peruvian Spanish Language Course Information can be found on our website.
