Program description:

Our award winning tropical coral reef expeditions in South Western Madagascar, are open to volunteers of all ages. No previous scuba diving experience is necessary. An excellent opportunity to do something positive for the environment while surrounded by incredible vistas, warm tropical waters and white sandy beaches.

Volunteers are taught to scuba dive and gain padi certification (if no diving has been done before). Scientific training is then undertaken, which is a fun but important introduction to the western indian ocean marine life; fish, corals, invertebrates, and algae.

Volunteers will learn to identify these to species level. Upon completion of science training, volunteers will start working closely with local marine biologists, students, and fishermen, scuba diving on average, two times a day. These are survey dives and involve identification of marine life while under the water. Volunteers will be totally involved in all aspects of the expedition, from kit maintenance to helping give seminars and workshops to local fishermen, schools, and villagers. Every week volunteers get the chance to do some recreational diving and take part in other sporting activites. There is also a bar and small shop on site. Accommodation is in eco-cabins on the blue ventures' beach. The cabins have running water, showers, and comfortable beds. We feel that to get the most out of the expedition comfortable living is essential!

Benefits and advantages of the program:

At our Madagascar field station our research programme is aimed at exploring ways to improve the sustainability of Andavadoaka's unique marine and coastal resources. Our goal is to help the local community with both advice and implementation, in order to help sustain the traditional artisanal fishing economy as well as minimize the environmental impacts of human activities on the region’s marine and coastal environments. In other parts of Madagascar, particularly further South, these activities have had devastating effects. Research runs at the site year-round. This has facilitated the development of a number of individual research projects and studies, and will enable continuous monitoring studies to be undertaken. These ongoing research efforts are focussed on providing high-quality data and recommendations that promote the sustainable use of marine resources upon which these communities depend. We take our lead from our local partners and research steering committee. Working with our partner organisations, we identify environmental issues critical to the community, and then develop research plans to address them. In addition to the invaluable advice our partners provide, this collaboration ensures the suitability and appropriateness of our work within the region.
