Volunteer with disadvantaged children, work at a special education centre, work on public health projects and conservation projects in Thailand. Another option is the Mini-Adventure Thailand where you can combine volunteering with adventure. Spend an additional two weeks learning about the Language and Culture of Thailand.
WORK WITH DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN:
In Thailand child care carries a broad meaning and it covers providing protective shelter to the children, protecting kids from physical damage, health, economic & social conditions, family histories, incidence of abuse, legal provision etc. Childcare is normally considered to be associated with orphans only. But in Thailand, there are no separate orphan centers; however, orphans are in the shelters where they constitute roughly one fourth of the total children. In Thailand, Global Crossroad offers working opportunities with kids in different settings.
Childcare shelters have specialists to accomplish these broader objectives of child development. Although, our volunteers are not experts, they can be involved in some activities with those specialists to help and learn as well. Volunteer will have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the children's lives, from practical activities to playing games and teaching English. Many of the orphanages place an emphasis on skills such as sewing, hairdressing or carpentry; if you have practical skills they will be very useful
Currently volunteer work is available in baby homes (0-5 years old), in emergency homes (5-18 years old), in child protection centres (7-18 years old) and in children's homes (5-18 years old).
In order to work with children, we need to apply in advance and get approval by the concerned authority so volunteers are suggested to apply 1-2 months in advance. We normally need a recent photo of the volunteer and a photocopy of their passport.
SPECIAL EDUCATION CENTER:
Thai Government has launched a campaign Education for All to ensure that every child shall not be discriminated from school because of their physical, mental, social, economic and legal prevalence. The marginal children (orphans, handicapped, mentally retarded children, street children, abandoned children, children from poor and broken families, abused children, young offender, children with no custodians, children at risks of abuse and neglects, children from ethnic minority etc) are socialized in this type of placements. Some of the children studying in these schools are from local communities and ordinary families. Some of the children admitted to and living in childcare shelters and emergency homes are transferred to these schools.
Volunteers working in the special education center teach basic English or other subjects. Additional helps to support kids might be requested. Volunteers having skill like teaching blind, mentally retarded, handicapped would be best for these projects.
PUBLIC HEALTH PROJECTS:
In Thailand, every district has at least one hospital and every sub-district has one public health center to serve the people in the area. Each public health center organizes activities or community visits in its command area (10-15 villages/ communities). These activities are primary health care services (e.g. vaccination, maternity care, child care) and creating awareness or campaigning about disease prevention e.g. mosquito and fly control and balanced diet/nutrition of children and women e.g. Iodine (I) supplements. Community health centers particularly in North and North Eastern regions of Thailand are more active because these two regions are relatively backward where people have limited access to hospitals and private clinics unlike in the central region. Volunteers will be involved in all these activities.
CONSERVATION PROJECTS:
In Thailand Global Crossroad offers amazing conservation projects in three different areas. These conservation programs have been already in place or potential to develop. Volunteers interested in conservation program should provide more details of interest and contact Global Crossroad so that we can organize appropriate programs and the place. Some of the programs are described here.
Presently conservation projects are available in the following areas:
Rare species conservation (RSC)
Turtle conservation
Fish and prawn conservation
Conservation projects are seasonal, physical demanding, and background/experience of volunteers in related project is expected
MINI-ADVENTURE THAILAND:
Our unique Thailand Mini-adventure program blends your remarkable volunteer experience with a thrilling visit to Bangkok and surrounding places of tourist attractions. For the two weeks that you will travel in Thailand, you will encounter challenges and issues that plague the children of Thailand. Witnessing the problems of Thailand's youth, you will have numerous opportunities to give the care and love that these children need. While you give hope to these children, you will receive a chance of a lifetime - to explore the amazing city of Bangkok and other wonderful destinations of Thailand.
In Thailand Mini-adventure program volunteer will work as an assistant child care taker in child development center. Child Care Center is a day care center where poor villagers leave their kids before they go to work in their offices/factories. These are established by local government especially in the areas where there are poor communities to help poor people who can not hire nannies for their kids or send to private nurseries in town.
Here, volunteers will engage in various activities that work to support local children, like teaching English, sanitation, playing games, drawing pictures, and other projects that are requested by local organizations. Furthermore, volunteers can participate in some physical activities, like planting, maintaining, and watering flowers around the orphanages. After a few days of working with children, Global Crossroad organizes a remarkable mini-cultural Bangkok tour that will allow volunteers to see some of the most popular tourist destinations of Thailand.
LANGUAGE AND CULTURE (2 WEEKS) PROGRAM:
Global Crossroad is always mindful of providing comfortable and enjoyable life to volunteers when they stay far from their family and friends. To make this happen Global Crossroad designs language and cultural program that volunteers can stay very close with Thai family and learn much more about Thailand and her diverse veracity. Global Crossroad therefore, offers 2-week long language course includes cultural orientation, focuses on learning Thai language, Thai language instruction, introduction to Thai customs, village stay, and sightseeing of the most spectacular places of Bangkok. During two weeks of language program, the first week of language class focuses on learning Thai language, including Thai language instruction (mostly theoretical), while in second phase we will introduce you to Thai language practice by staying with host family, this includes orientation of Thai customs and culture, and sightseeing in the area.
