Program description: |
Combine Spanish lessons and volunteer work with children while staying in the charming colonial, cobble-street town of Copán Ruinas in Honduras. Live with a host family and practise your Spanish over a home cooked meal, experience the local way of life and get involved in the community by helping out in the local schools. GVI has established a variety of programmes whereby volunteers like yourself can assist the understaffed local school teachers. Mornings are spent teaching all types of lessons, including literacy, basic mathematics, English and other subjects. The afternoons are spent working in GVI introduced “aulas abiertas”, or “open classrooms”, whereby children who need extra attention, or who want to take English classes, are able to come and receive help.
Education is free in Honduras though the parents still have to buy the basic materials for the child to attend, which they often cannot do. GVI is endeavoring to cover these costs and included in your fee is a utensils scholarship for one child for one year. Your fee will also go towards food subsidies for the school meals and fruit for the children, educational materials for classes, monthly birthday celebrations, painting and maintenance. In addition, each volunteer has a US$100 donation; you decide where it should be spent.
In your free time head off for an adventurous day trip to the stunning Caribbean Bay Islands of Roatán and Utila where you can go scuba diving or just laze on the beach. Participate in horseback riding and hiking treks in the surrounding hills and valleys of Copán, have a soak in the local hot springs, take a tour around a Macau breeding centre and a Butterfly Farm near to Copán, or just spend a day relaxing in the natural beauty of Central America.
