Program description: |

Exceptional opportunity, open to all, to learn plenty about the contemporary art world, whether for purposes of higher education, colour a dulled imagination or help make a shrewd business investment, the course is completely cutting edge, exclusive in content and plenty of fun.
Why, when and for whom
After an AHA Contemporary Art course, you will have an opinion, not a prejudice, about modern art. Exhibitions will mean something to you and a whole new world (which incidentally is your world) will open before your eyes. This sort of extra-curricular course is an eye-catching addition to any UCAS personal statement or a useful stepping stone for future artists, architects and media-people. It is hard to imagine a more absorbing, worthwhile course for the summer holidays with tuition and access simply not available by other means.
Course outline and details
Taught over two weeks in London (with optional visits to Paris and Amsterdam at the weekends), students will have tutorials in the major museums, private collections, exclusive galleries, artist studios, construction sites, iconic buildings and architectural practices. This course is all about hands on study, in places such as the Gagosian, the Tate Museums, White Cube, the East End galleries and Wembley Stadium. The course is restricted to 20 students split into tutorial groups of 10 in number in order that everyone can truly be involved. Students are generally aged 17-22. Teaching time on the course amounts to at least 67 hours. In addition, we organise four special evening outings which may include gallery openings, one-off exhibitions or avant-garde film screenings.
Course tutors
Tutors are chosen for their excellent art credentials and strong ability to encourage interest and knowledge in others. All tutors for the course are practising artists and architects working at the vanguard of contemporary art. It is thanks to them that we can offer such exciting behind-the-scenes access to a number of studios around London. Our tutors are not intimidating in any way: rather they are people with a passion for the art of their own era, endowed with the knack of explaining ideas enthusiastically and clearly. Please see our web site for a full listing of tutors.
Structured themes
The course is divided into themes, chief amongst which is a who’s who of artists and the main movements. We also examine different types of art, including installation, performance, sculpture and complete interior design. Likewise we study the different demands on architecture from iconic buildings to the prestigious office complex, museums, restaurants and private houses. We peer into the future by considering technology and eco-architecture. Aside from what we study on-site, there are the colleges, the critics and the market to consider.
The nature of contemporary art is one of constant change: consequently the website carries our evolving itinerary.
Optional outings to Paris and Amsterdam
Optional weekends away to Paris during the course and Amsterdam at the end of the course are a wonderful opportunity to see the genesis of modern art with experts. In Paris we study Picasso , the post-Impressionists as well as contemporary artist communes like Le Frigo. In Amsterdam we look to Van Gogh and the contemporary collection at the Stedelijk Museum as well as the hyper-modern extension to the Rijksmuseum.
Accommodation
Weekends away aside, this is a non-residential course. Should you need help finding accommodation in London please let us know since we can recommend a number of family-run B&B’s at reasonable rates.
