For centuries Chinese culture has been leading with the invention of paper, gunpowder and writing systems long before comparable discoveries took place in Europe.
Mandarin is the most widely spoken form of Chinese and is now the official language of the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. With all Chinese dialects sharing one writing system of over 40,000 symbols - of which you have to study at least 3,000 in order to be considered literate! - the language is inherently difficult but fascinating to learn. And with the number of Chinese speakers exceeding one billion that certainly makes for a lot of fascinating people and cultures to explore.
