Benefits and advantages of the program:

The person who will be leading the course is very experienced in not only using GIS but teaching others how to, and learning about it in this context will add a lot to peoples' understanding of GIS.  It is also the first big step towards making eco-tourism a reality for people around here.  In this area there are a lot of small farmers - a mixture of subsistence farmers, coffee and cattle.  It is quite a poor area, and it is hard to see how these current farming activities can change that longer term.  We believe that it is only by finding a future for the people who live and work in this area that we will find a future for the forest itself.  Eco-tourism has the potential to fulfil both of those criteria, so this course could be a huge step forward for people in the area
