Program description: |

With so many awe inspiring countries in Asia it’s difficult to decide what’s right for you. Relax on the white sandy beaches in the Thai province of Krabi. Enhance your meditation and yoga skills whilst in India. Or slip on your hiking boots and trek through the natural beauty that is Nepal. But why choose just one? GVI have combined three of its most popular programmes to offer the ‘Asian Explorer’.
Over a period of 13 weeks you will fuse 3 different programmes in Thailand, India and Nepal. Joining established educational projects focused on teaching English to local community members. The new Tri-Explorer package allows you to immerse yourself in these magical countries diverse cultures whilst giving something back to the local communities. Thailand, India and Nepal are all unique in culture, history and society. However they all share a common requirement. Although all have gained remarkable progress over recent years, there are still certain regions that remain in need of necessary education to allow them to take control of their own inevitable development instead of being forced to rely on foreign development. By teaching free English classes for the community, GVI volunteers are helping to put English skills in the hands of local people.
In Thailand the province of Krabi is known for its stunning scenery which is being destroyed by the growth of tourism and natural resource depletion. Several locations in the province and surrounding region were severely hit by the tsunami and are still struggling to recover. The district of Ao Luk is in the process of developing a pier that will serve as a port to such tourist spots as Phuket and Ko Phi Phi. Ao Luk is preparing to become a tourist thoroughfare. GVI work with local organisations the Ao Luk Non-Formal Education Centre and Thailand Wetlands International to provide the community English language lessons, with additional work and time spent on community and tourist environmental awareness.
Projects in Udaipur, Rajasthan are run by a local Indian organisation. The organisation was founded in early 2005 with a goal to support sustainable human development by promoting volunteering and rural and responsible tourism in India. The organisation tries to bring benefit to both society and the volunteers. The efforts of GVI volunteers represent a vital contribution to our community, as by helping on the projects the volunteers share their energy and time with the people and as a result experience Indian culture first hand.
A simple way of life in the villages of Nepal means a simple passion to help can be enough. Specific (quite basic) practical skills can be valuable; skills in IT, carpentry, catering, - even simple plumbing, electrics, etc. And many miscellaneous talents too can be applied – musical and sporting are just two. Three qualities to be used and developed are awareness, common sense and confidence.
