|
Based on the South-West coast around the town of Panadura, care work in Sri Lanka is a multi-dimensional experience offering an enormous variety of choice. All the work here involves a lot of commitment to the children - including caring and working with mentally or physically disabled children and orphanage work. The location is fabulous - amongst paddy fields and palm trees populated with monkeys, and usually only ever 15 minutes from the beach!
A care home for young girls with mental disabilities near Panadura has a school combines working with the girls, but also helping in a small kindergarten which is based just next door. Both are looking for volunteers to assist in day-to-day activities. Otherwise you could go half an hour down the road to Honara where you can help in the vocational training centre (VTC) for the physically disabled. Here you can help teach the girls how to dance, sew, cook, arrange flower bouquets, successfully grow crops and learn various other skills to allow them to fulfil their potential in the Sri Lankan context.
There are also two boys homes in Panadura - one for orphans and one for mentally disabled children. Games are always popular here in the afternoons! In the mornings you often spend time in one of the girls' homes or even at the local Montessori school, helping four year-olds to learn the alphabet or colour in pictures.
