Program description:

English language classes are easily available to children in larger towns and cities or to those who can afford private classes. However, many smaller Arab towns and villages are quite cut off from these opportunities and so children miss out on classes.

In addition to this, Arab children in Israel must learn Hebrew too, so English for them is the third language that they must learn, rather than the second language that it is for the Jewish population of Israel. As such, grades are often lower in their high school matriculation exams that will decide whether they can progress to Further Education

We want to start offering after school English classes in these villages so that children can get access to high quality English language tutoring. Through the classes and a better understanding of the language the children will be able to learn more about different cultures and will be more able to access English language resources, especially on the internet and in libraries.

Main purpose(s) of the post:

To research, create and develop a three month after school English language course and to teach the course as part of Baladna’s English language pilot scheme.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a candidate that is comfortable in taking the lead on a project and has the skills and experience needed to devise a 3month series of classes for high-school aged children.

At a strategic level, the volunteer will contribute to making Baladna’s English language project fulfil its potential. Their points of view will be taken into account and their experiences and knowledge will help to formulate project so that both future volunteers and students receive the most out of the courses.

Main responsibilities of the job:

The successful volunteer will help Baladna to create an after school English language programme for children in Arab villages in northern Israel. This is a real opportunity for the volunteer to gain practical experience of curriculum development.

To this end the volunteer in conjunction with the director and other members of Baladna will research and create a curriculum for after school classes.  The curriculum will be created in conjunction with local teacher sin the area.

At the end of the pilot period the volunteer will write a short evaluative report on the project and with the Director of Baladna will discuss whether the pilot project was successful and if it is sustainable in the longer-term (i.e rolling it out on a wider level to more villages)
