|
Teach in Stunning Malaysia. Brunei is the Gateway to Borneo, where daily living is a joy. Situated on the wonderful island of Borneo (off the Malaysia mainland), amid rainforest, tropical beaches and other areas of outstanding beauty, is the small gem that is Brunei.
People usually know little about Brunei … Fact number one - no, it’s not in the Middle East!
The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is a modernised centre with large public buildings. The rest of the country: 85% of beautiful, untouched jungle.
Schools in Brunei are fascinating because their locations are so different.You could work in a school in a village, or one by the beach, or a rural school in the rainforest ... or even a school in Kampong Ayer.
A Kampong Ayer is a collection of 28 Water Villages built on stilts in the Brunei River and here you'd go to school by boat - a novel way to start the day!
Induction:
You'll have four days Induction before you start work, and some of this will be devoted to some training and guidance on teaching in your school. You'll be given a tour of the town and the area, plus in-depth information about the local culture. You'll also be guided on what to do, what not to do, how to dress, how to behave, as well as useful local information like banking hours, etc.
We work with the CfBT, which stands for the Centre for British Teachers. This company employs expatriate native English speakers from Australia, Canada, America and the UK, who are placed in carefully selected schools throughout Brunei. They also require the help of volunteers, to work in certain schools that particularly need the help. Through the CfBT’s dedication to teaching, they have built up an excellent resource centre which you will be able to use to help you with your teaching. Facilities here include a library, (with many workbooks and other resources that you can draw on), Internet access and photocopiers to enable you to produce materials for your lessons. There will be lots of help available to help you with structuring your lessons.
Schools:
The schools we work in are government schools and the children are generally quite poor. The majority of children that you will teach are Muslim Bruneians and typically speak Malay.

What are the dates of this program: Term time runs from 3rd January to 17th March, 28th March to 11 June, 25th June to 8th September and 19th September to 1st December. The placements are flexible and volunteers can chose when and for how long they would like to teach.
