|
French is widely spoken in Senegal. English on the other hand is not! There is an increasing demand for English speakers in and around the provincial town of Saint Louis due to a rise in tourism and foreign investment, simply because English is the main international language.
Most volunteers work in secondary schools with children from the ages of 13 to 16, plus you are also needed to help with English clubs “Les Clubs Anglais” which meet once or twice a week for students aged from 17 to 19. The Clubs Anglais offer a chance to the teenagers to really improve their spoken English through debates and film discussions, and having a native English speaker present is invaluable. You will also have the opportunity to meet regularly with the local teachers to discuss any issues and generate new ideas.
There are generally between 30 and 40 students in a class and you will find that they really do want to learn about your home and way of life. If you enjoy sports, there is also the possibility of teaching football and other sports as well as teaching English.
