|
Our teaching placements are situated both in Bangkok and in many towns within an hour's travel of the city. You will be working in a government school with local teachers. These schools vary in size, from small temple-based schools up to larger schools with more facilities. However, whichever school you work in they all need you. Don't be deceived by the often-large 'English departments'. The local teachers are good at teaching the grammar and theory side of English, but having generally learnt from other Thai people, they nearly always lack the fluency to teach the conversation skills. You'll help fill this gap focussing on developing the confidence of students who are nervous to talk.
Students are generally dedicated and hard working, responding to the arrival of a new face. Thai culture ensures that they are especially respectful to teachers in general - although children are still children! Being between 11 and 16 years old, the students like to find out about life where you come from. If you have an interest in football they will want to know which team you support and what you think of David Beckham's new hairstyle. A popular lesson may be teaching a class how to sing one of the latest pop songs from the west and helping them to understand what it is all about.
