|
Ukraine is a wonderful counrty full with traditions, culture and architechture dating back for centuries. The people are terrific and their compassion and friendliness reflect this.
Since its independence, Ukraine, and Kiev in particular, has opened up and become an extremely friendly, hospitable country. The people are very sociable and charming, and in fact, socialising plays a big part in Ukrainian life!
Ukraine is growing as a popular destination for tourists and Travellers Volunteers alike, and Kiev is rapidly becoming the city to see in Eastern Europe. It's even beginning to compete with Moscow.
Ukrainians are famous for their humour, melodiousness and their artistic handicraft talents such as weaving, painting, wood-carving and ceramics. But mostly Ukrainians have a sensitivity for working with the land, which they love with a passion.
Ukraine's most famous geographical feature is the Steppe, which is a level, treeless plain. The Crimean Mountains are in the Crimean peninsula and the Carpathians lie in the west.Mixed forests of pine and fir-trees, beeches, limes, oaks and elms cover the mountains, but the thickest woods are to be found in the northern part of the republic, in Volyn. Kiev (or Kyiv), a scenic city of close to 3 million people situated on the Dnipro River, is the bustling capital of Ukraine. It is magnificent and well worth exploring. It's architecture is frequently imposing, giving the city grandeur and attesting to its heritage. On the other hand, the city sparkles with light and airiness and will tempt you into exploring both its history and its modernity.
Modern Kiev has made a quantum leap from the days when it was governed centrally as another city of the former Soviet Union. Some of the remnants of that period are maintained, but more as a testament to its progress than an endearment to a bygone era.
Kiev, is clean, welcoming and steeped in culture. The people are welcoming and the views from the parks across the river and the city are breathtaking. Kiev offers buildings and surroundings which give a sense of purpose and makes one very glad to be there. There are the magnificent cathedrals, opera, ballet and all that is welcoming in a comfortable, modern city.

You don't need any qualifications to do a teaching placement in Ukraine. Just enthusiasm and motivation to experience a new and exciting culture - from the inside.
All teaching institutions are based in and around the beautiful city of Kiev, and teaching placements can be anything from teaching English to Science. It is a great achievement to learn English for Ukrainian people, and you will be overwhelmed by the amount of teaching they strive for and their commitment to learning. In this regard you are going to be in great demand by the students, which may even mean socialising with the older students after school hours!
SCHOOLS:
Teaching takes place mainly in State schools for about 15 to 18 hours a week, with students ranging from 7-16 years of age. The students at the schools where we work are lovely and will already have a general grasp of the English language. Your brief is to assist in teaching conversational English to children who'll value the experience of learning English from a native speaker. Generally, class sizes range from 15 to 20 pupils, but can be larger than this.
Most of the work will be to help with their grammar and pronunciation, but you may also have to help with literature studies, depending on the specific group’s progress. The schools, students, and teachers greatly appreciate your help, and you will feel as though you have helped towards giving some of these students a chance for better job opportunities in later life.
You will normally assist the local teachers to start with, but depending on your ability you may be given complete control of a particular class or group. However, you may also only take small groups of students within a teacher’s lesson, for the entirety of your placement. This means that you will have smaller groups where you can have more of a direct impact on the students you are dealing with.
You can also teach at kindergarden or teach adults.
