Sri Lanka is a diverse and tropical paradise. Hot and humid all year round, the people are delightful and there is so much to do. With every weekend free for travelling with your fellow volunteers (who often become life-long friends) you can experince first hand perfect beaches, impressive waterfalls, tea plantations, spiritual pilgramages, Buddhist meditation, ancient cities, temples, bustling cities, markets and many a holy cow standing in the road holding up traffic for a few hours.
Every day there is a multitude of things to make you smile in Sri Lanka.
We have two very special and very different teaching placements in Sri Lanka:
Ja-Ela is on the outskirts of Colombo, Sri Lanka's Capital city. This is a long running program and it is very popular! Volunteers teach at 4 of the local schools and a local orphanage and young adults computer class. There is a great range of teaching available. These are poor schools whose pupils benefit enormously by learning spoken English. It can open up the opportunity for better jobs, in tourism or in the city.
Wasgamuwa is a breathtaking National Park 7 hours North of Colombo. This project is for the adventurer looking for a true life changing experience! Volunteers teach in a small rice paddy farmers village on the outskirts of the National Park. This is a real community project and you will most likely get to know the local monk and get follwoed to school by adoring school children. It is a place that becomes home and the very slow paced, peaceful exsistence is hard to leave once you have settled in.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NOW HELPING IN AN ORPHANAGE FOR TSUNAMI AFFECTED VOLUNTEERS. The orphanage was recently set up for about 180 children from 5 to 18. Teachers at Ja-Ela are visiting for a few hours a day to offer lessons in English, to play games and just to give some much needed love and attention.

What are the dates of this program: Teaching takes place all year round. There are school holidays for the month of April and August and over Christmas for a few weeks. These vary slightly each year.

£995 - £1,495 (for 1 to 3 months) this includes all your food, accommodation and excellent support throughout your placement. This also contriburtes to the many donations Travellers makes in deserving Sri Lankan schools.
