As one of the poorer areas of the country, local youngsters struggle against the problems of child labour, alcoholism and abuse. You could play an important role in enriching their education and equipping the children with tools for better futures. Large class sizes and limited resources make for a challenging project, but one which is infinitely rewarding. Placement details: i-to-i works with a primary school located in Mikindani, 7km west of Mombasa. The suburb is very poor which means the youths and orphans in the area struggle against the problems of child labour, alcoholism and abuse. The school was founded in 1996 with the sponsorship from the church of Nazarene. The school was set up as a place where the orphans and street children of the area could be provided with an education. The school is severely under-resourced and often has large class sizes due to staff shortages. As the school cannot afford to pay its teachers a good salary it is hard for them to recruit staff and often the staff they do have are forced to take on other work so cannot be at the school regularly.
