Program description:

Volunteer with orphaned children and disabled children, teach English, work in environmental education, work on an organic farm, volunteer on a cloud forest conservation project, and enjoy mini-adventure in South America's beautiful Andean highland country of Ecuador.

In Ecuador, the rapidly growing tourism industry alongside the country's desire for ascent within the global economy has ignited a passion for learning the English language. A country blessed with cultural and natural majesty, tourism has emerged as an increasingly viable means of generating income. Ecuadorians understand that knowledge of English might better facilitate tourism programs and attract more tourists. Thus, many local schools and agencies have requested Global Crossroad's assistance in recruiting teachers to speak English. The ability to speak English well can ensure Ecuadorian students' successes by equipping them with the skills they need to be able to compete in the growing global economy.

Our English teaching project in Ecuador is located in the Las Tolas village, which is surrounded by picturesque landscapes and the beautiful Cloud Forests. Volunteers teaching in Las Tolas will stay in the village with host families, allowing them to closely experience the village's culture and the wonder and beauty of the surrounding environment, all while making a positive impact on the future of the village children. During their stay, Volunteers also have the opportunity to explore and learn Spanish. Most of the volunteers working in this project work as a teacher in a private or public elementary school. Responsibilities of volunteers include teaching simple English and practice simple conversational English with the children. Additional help with health, sanitation, and extra curricular activities are also expected.

Orphanage project:In the last two decades, the population of Ecuador has doubled, creating a growing population of abandoned children. Most of these children are from poor and/or indigenous families. Growing poverty, lack of education and limited governmental resources further exacerbate the problem of street children and orphans in Ecuador. In the capital city of Quito, our local partners have instituted an orphanage to protect the life of these vulnerable kids from further exploitation and potential homelessness. However, this project is in need of volunteers who are willing to share their time, efforts, skill, and love for the good of these abandoned children.

In the Ecuador Orphanage Project, volunteers will help the underprivileged children of the orphanage by teaching basic English or Spanish. Volunteers will help by feeding, caring for, and simply playing with these very young children. Ecuador Volunteers also help in developing creative programs art, music, dance, sports, etc. Additional assistance with day trips, sanitation, cooking, and administrative duties might be requested.

Disabled Children Project:

Reports shows that nearly 300,000 children suffer from different forms of disabilities in Ecuador. Approximately 35 percent of children in Ecuador's orphanages are disabled. In many poor and indigenous families, these disabled children are kept at home without adequate medical care, further worsening their conditions. Volunteer Ecuador's disabled children project was thus developed to take care of these handicapped and physically retarded children. The project aims to help children by offering them physical therapy, stimulation, and care. Volunteer in Ecuador project welcomes any interested or skilled volunteer to work with these kids.

Volunteers interested in the Disabled Children Project must have a special interest in working with affected children. Working with disabled children can prove to be very emotionally challenging for volunteers, but even more rewarding. Though seeing the ways different illnesses have affected young lives can be heartrending, work with disabled children is immensely uplifting. It is truly amazing and rewarding to watch a child respond to your love, care and attention. Ecuador Volunteers will help in language therapy, mimical language and education. Additional works include caring for the children in terms of feeding, washing, playing, and teaching.

Teach English in Ecuador:

Additional help with health, sanitation, and extra curricular activities are also expected.

Work on a Community Organic Farm:

The idea of sustainable development is making organic farming a popular agricultural practice in Ecuador. Working on a community's Organic farm affords volunteers the opportunity to live and work on an organic farm located in one of Ecuador's beautiful villages. Volunteers support an ongoing organic faming program aimed at developing socially and ecologically sound organic farming practices, while learning more about organic farming, reforestation, and environmental issues in Ecuador.

Volunteering in Ecuador's community organic farm gives volunteer ample opportunities to immerse in the local culture and people. Works in the organic farm are physically demanding.

Conservation Project (Cloud Forest)

The slopes of the Andes are dressed with a wonderful, dense ecosystem: the Cloud Forest. This ecosystem, also called the Andean eyebrow due to its generous vegetation, is one of the most diverse in the world. Though its characteristics are very similar to the rain forest, the Cloud Forest differs slightly. Because the Cloud Forest is not flat, but rather on a slope, the sun's rays are able to penetrate deeper inside the forest, creating an ecosystem that is home to many exuberant and unique life forms.

Work as a volunteer in Ecuador Cloud Forest offers you an exceptional opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Andes while helping to preserve the amazing natural resources of Ecuador. Working in the natural reserve will give Ecuador volunteers an exceptional life in the clouds. Volunteers' activities involve improving the existing infrastructure of this invaluable forest and protecting existing flora and fauna. Works include: planting trees, maintaining trails by cleaning them of plants with a machete, improving trails through building stairs or fences for safety, constructing new trails, and constructing new showers for the cabins. Additional helps on related activities of project might be requested
