Program description:

Located on the beautiful Sarapiqui River, the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to link the community with conservation. We are currently looking for a volunteer to run our Environmental Education Program.  This includes leading weekly ecology clubs to students at local schools and at the Center, supporting the community in conservation projects, and helping community members build on their ecotourism projects.

The Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) is located in the northern lowland rainforest of Costa Rica near the town of Puerto Viejo. The SCLC began in the early 1990's as a public library for local residents. Presently, the SCLC works to foster environmental education in the local community, and to support conservation projects to protect the Sarapiqui's region's rich natural heritage.

The SCLC also believes strongly that ecotourism can be an effective tool for sustainable development in the rural tropics. True ecotourism encompasses both environmental and social sustainability, and the SCLC seeks to link conservation and the local community by facilitation interaction between tourists and local residents. In this effort, the SCLC forms a partnership with Holbrook Travel and the world-renowned Selva Verde Lodge to offer a unique educational travel experience. Visitors learn firsthand the importance of sustaining the rainforest and the local communities on whose well-being the future of the forest depends.

The Sarapiqui region lacks access to many of the educational and infrastructure resources commonly enjoyed by other areas of Costa Rica. Similarly, the region shows atypically high rates of poverty, illiteracy and teenage pregnancy. The environment is threatened by poverty and unchecked economic development.

In this context, ecotourism can bring many benefits to remote tropical rainforest regions such as Sarapiqui. Yet tourism that does not benefit local communities cannot properly be called ecotourism. The SCLC works with the support of Selva Verde Lodge to provide programs of direct interest to the local community. Offering local residents opportunities that will improve their future job prospects may help to enlist and empower the local community in protecting their environment.
