Program description: |
The Aang Serian International Summer School provides a unique opportunity to learn directly from local Tanzanian pastoralists, farmers and healers, as well as expatriate researchers. Field trips to the Maasai village of Eluai and the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro are combined with lectures, reading groups, discussion groups, drum & dance workshops and Swahili classes.
Highlights of the program include Maasai bead jewelry classes conducted by local women, accompanied by explanations of the cultural significance of different colours and patterns; a chance to participate in a sacred forest retreat and prepare medicinal soup; visits to Chagga home gardens and an analysis of the diversity of traditional food crops, together with cooking lessons and food tasting; and the opportunity to volunteer alongside local people in helping to build classrooms or student accommodation at a rural secondary school.
Participants camp out during the field trips, and stay in guest houses or family homes throughout their time in Arusha. A range of traditional foods are offered throughout the program, as well as more familiar 'Western-style' dishes.
