"I fell head over heels in love with Guatemala, its culture and its people. Volunteering with Cross-Cultural Solutions has allowed me to experience a culture as a part of the community rather than an outsider, exposing me to parts of the society that would have been hidden otherwise."
This is what one volunteer had to say about their experience in Guatemala.
Volunteer Abroad with Cross-Cultural Solutions. Work side-by-side with local people and experience another culture like never before. It's the experience of a lifetime. As an international volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions, you're making a meaningful contribution, working side-by-side with local people and sharing in the goals of a community that warmly welcomes you. You're experiencing another culture like never before and really getting to know its people. You'll gain new perspectives and insight into the culture and yourself. It's an exciting and personally inspiring experience, and you'll develop memories that will be with you forever.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
The Central American country of Guatemala is a neighbour to Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, with coastlines on the Pacific and Caribbean Oceans. A majority of Guatemala is mountainous, with more than 30 volcanoes. From lush, tropical rainforests to rich and fertile plains, the country's rich geography contributes to its variety of climates. Guatemala is also known for its cultural diversity. The population is a mix between Ladinos, or people of Spanish heritage, Mayans and Mestizos, people that are a mix of both Latino and Mayan. The Mayan population is made up of 22 different ethnicities all with their own unique dress and language that distinguishes them. Although present day Guatemala is known primarily for its Mayan roots and vibrant culture, the country has many layers to its rich political history, from Spanish and Mexican rule to many other forms government, to a 36-year civil war that ended with the 1996 Peace Accords. Since then, Guatemala has seen an emphasis on legal, linguistic, and educational rights for the indigenous communities and has enjoyed greater stability and tranquility for the country as a whole.
Cross-Cultural Solutions runs programmes in Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango. Volunteers in Guatemala are involved with caring for infants and children, teaching children, caring for the elderly, observing and assisting local medical professionals, and caring for people with disabilities.
