Teach Conversational English in this hot tropical paradise to deserving children and adults who need your help! A stimulating yet laid-back experience in one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in the world.
LOCATION:
The colourful city of Rio, jammed between miles of coastline and mountains, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest and most beautiful cities in the world. It pulses with life and deserves its reputation as Cidade Maravilhosa (Wonderful City). The inhabitants of Rio, known locally as Carioca’s, pursue pleasure like no other people, fully utilizing their impressive beaches with beautiful people, samba, ice cold beers and the local firewater, cachaça!
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
We have a selection of institutions that you can teach at, catering for children ranging in age from very young to teenagers. You can also teach adults looking to improve their English, and in turn, their career prospects. With many worthwhile Travellers projects on-going in Rio, you choose the age group you want to work with. You may want to concentrate your time in just one institute or you may be keen to spread your help between a selection of institutes, gaining a varied experience.
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Latin America.
The enormous satisfaction of making a difference to under-privileged children.
New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
An entry on your CV/Resume that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
DO I NEED QUALIFICATIONS TO DO THIS PLACEMENT?:
No, you don't need any qualifications to participate in a teaching placement in Brazil. Facilities range from basic to very good, with some having modern computer rooms and access to the internet.
Brazil gives you the chance to experience the full spectrum of teaching, with students ranging from young children to adults. The schools and education centres have a lovely atmosphere with class sizes ranging from groups of 8-10 within the educational centres and up to 30-35 within the schools.
All of the children are full of the energy of life and will greet you with big beaming smiles, making for fun filled lessons. Some of the students are very keen to learn and will often ask for after school practise to use their English skills.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD:
Accommodation is situated in the Flamengo region of Rio - just a hop, skip and a jump away from famous Copacabana beach! This is a great place to be as you will be only 3 minutes away from the metro station, opposite the Catete Palace and you will be able to visit Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue with great ease.
Past volunteers have regarded eating out as one of the highlights of living in South America, and an essential part of Brazilian culture! Because of this, the price of your placement only includes your breakfast. For dinner, you’ll get the chance to venture out and sample some of the fabulous food which Rio is famous for.
For breakfast in the hotel you can expect natural fruits and juices (try the acai - a delicious berry to sprinkle on your granola cereal), coffee, milk, bread, cheese, ham, butter, jams and sweet cakes (popular in Brazil for breakfast) amongst other things - so you certainly won’t be leaving on an empty stomach! You will be allowed to use the kitchen facilities whenever it is not being used by the hotel staff.
The Brazilian passion for food is reflected in the numbers of people you will see spending long, balmy evenings dining in restaurants and al fresco in the city’s buzzing streets, feasting on fare from the traditional Feijoada (black beans and pork stew) or Mariscada (seafood stew) to modern global cuisine rivalling that of any other international city! If you’re partial to tipple, you might like to indulge in a caipiranha, Brazil’s traditional carnival drink made with lime and cachaça, best enjoyed in the sunshine with a churrasco, which is a Brazilian barbeque of rice, meats and - of course - salsa!
The cost of eating out in Rio can vary from a just a couple of pounds up to a couple of hundred pounds! This is one city where you certainly won’t have any trouble eating well on a tight budget - there are some very inexpensive options available. The trick is to keep your eyes peeled for the bargain eateries offering specials such as buffet lunches.

OUR PARTICIPANTS SAY...
"The schools' main objective is to keep children in off the streets, so it provides activities throughout the day and in the evenings in the hope that children will want to stay all day, every day..... and they do! On top of this, children receive a nutritious meal at lunchtime, which is usually their only meal of the entire day. The enthusiasm from the principal and staff has the most incredible effect on the children - despite their circumstances and the daily hardships that they face, they simply love school!! You will be welcomed with open arms to teach whatever you can, including drama, sports, music, art, IT. However, all of the teachers are very excited about being able to offer students the possibility to learn English.
The principal is incredibly genuine and passionate about the school and is viewed as a mother figure by many of the children. When I left, she couldn't thank me enough for being part of setting up this programme, which give children at the school the opportunity to be exposed to native English speakers. This project is going to be a huge success - the school is incredible and heartbreaking at the same time, anyone volunteering here will fall in love with its magical atmosphere!" Vicky Boughton, (Travellers volunteer).
