South Africa is a country of dramatic change and optimism and this is reflected in the schools where we work in Cape Town. Many public schools in the Cape Town area are over-crowded, understaffed and without the necessary resources. These schools find it hard to attract teachers away from the wages and resources offered by the numerous private schools so having volunteers is a real bonus. South Africa has a highly varied population speaking 11 national languages! Due to the cultural diversity, English is emerging as the language of communication in all walks of life and a good command of English is vital. Volunteers teach spoken English with primary or secondary children. There is the opprtunity to teach other subjects according to your interests and skills, and you will be encouraged to help with extra-curricular activities such as sport, music, art, drama and singing.
The children usually speak one of the tribal languages as their first language, so having a native English speaker is particularly helpful – you will probably find many of the teachers are also keen to practise their spoken English on you.
Your presence is vital to ensure this new generation of children from South Africa's townships, have the skills, enthusiasm and aspirations to continue in education or improve their job prospects and opportunities in their towns and villages, and beyond.

With Projects Abroad you can spend anything from two weeks to a year living overseas and helping out. You can see a very different part of the world, gain some valuable experience on a wide range of different projects and become part of a local community.
