A rewarding teaching project in the heart of China! Teaching in China is a real delight... work with children who really want to learn, and perhaps learn something from them in return.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Our teaching placements take place in a variety of schools and centres around Yangzhou - you'll be placed at one or several schools where you'll live and work, really becoming a part of the community.
You can teach any age, from Kindergarten to Adults - you choose!
You don't need any qualifications to participate in a teaching placement in China - just to be fluent in English and have a desire to learn about a new culture and give something back in return.
LOCATION:
Known as China's 'city of gardens and alleys', Yangzhou is one of China's little known gems. It has everything - traditional Chinese culture, architecture, cuisine and lifestyle combined with all the benefits of living in a modern Chinese town.
Yangzhou is enough 'out of the way' for you to feel as though you're living in real China, and has a fascinating 'Old Town' where you can explore alleys and noodle shops that still run as they did a century ago. However, the City's location in Jiangsu Province, only a stone's throw from Shanghai, means that you're never far from the glamour of one of the world's most modern urban centres. Here you can experience all the best bits of China - ancient and modern. Teach here and become a part of Chinese life!
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into the heart of Asia.
The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them
New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
An entry on your CV or Résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
And maybe best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD:
Your accommodation will either be on school campus or in a local hotel or hostel.
On School Campus: You will usually share a building with other volunteers or Chinese Teachers. You will usually have your own room and bathroom, although sometimes you may have to share a room with another volunteer. All rooms are clean and comfortable and some may have air conditioning, internet access and a TV!
In a Hotel or Hostel: If you stay in a hotel or hostel, you will most likely share your room with another Travellers volunteer. You'll usually have access to all the modern facilities you'd expect: internet access, a kitchen, TV, common room with DVDs, a security locker and a bar & restaurant on premises. The hostel and hotel that we use are both located in lively areas, where you will have the chance to meet other backpackers and travellers.
All your food is provided and you'll be given a budget to eat out in the many delicious local eateries around the hotel! Tim, our Yangzhou Organiser, often takes pride in taking volunteers out for group dinners to introduce them to the best local cuisine in the area!
OUR PARTICIPANTS SAY...
"I am gaining more and more confidence in teaching as expected. My project involves working with a wide age-range of students, the youngest being less than two years old and the eldest being in their fifties. I am also becoming more confident at communicating with groups of various sizes (from 1-1 lessons to 40-student classrooms).
Of course the best aspect about this project is having an excellent organiser like Tim around! I have had the perfect balance between teaching time and time off, which has meant that I have been able to really take in the Chinese culture.
I would definitely recommend this placement to everyone - anyone with any interest in teaching English abroad, to anyone who wants to visit China and learn about the Chinese way of life. I am very glad that I decided to do this placement, even though I originally wanted to coach sports - it has really been worthwhile.
Yangzhou is also better placed (than say Beijing or Shanghai) to plan trips into the heart of real China, whilst still being close enough to a major city (Shanghai)."
WHAT TO DO NEXT:
Talk to us - We're there to help you. Most of our team are ex Travellers volunteers and are ideally qualified to offer advice and guidance because they know what you're looking for. They'll help you find your perfect project - and then make it all happen!
If you’d like more information about this or any of our projects, please email or call us! If you’d like to apply for this project, please go to our website and complete the application form. As soon as we receive it, we’ll liaise with you and then start making your travel adventure happen.
It’s as easy as that.

Benefits and advantages of the program: |
 |
|
Your teaching will help in so many ways and you will be teaching to people who really want to learn as they know that it will result in greater opportunities in life for them. For the luckier ones, your teaching may mean they will get into a better university or improve their career prospects. The impact you will have on the lives of those you teach may well surprise you!
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO WHILE ON THIS PROJECT:
There’s so much more to see and do in China and it’s difficult not to want to travel as far around the country as your budget will take you! In our opinion, some of the highlights of the country are:
China's natural beauty! The tranquility and heartbreaking beauty of sunrise from the top of one of China’s sacred mountains is an absolutely unforgettable experience.
The Army of Terracotta Warriors outside Xi’an - 6000 soldiers and horses that were originally designed to guard the tomb of an ancient Emperor.
Tropical Xishuangbanna - China's very own South-East Asia complete with sunshine, Thai style temples, Dai minority dancing and water splashing festivals!
Northern China, along the path of the ruins of the Great wall, also has many sights, and a slightly rough-around-the-edges charm. Here, you can visit the Gobi desert & climb enormous sand dunes in Gansu Province or explore ancient grottoes and caverns full of religious art & Buddha statues at Dunhuang or Datong.
China's big cities - The economic and cultural and centres of this blossoming nation can be found in its 3 big cities - Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. These cities are practically alive with energy and each deserve a visit during your time in China.
The far North-West - Xinjiang Province in the far North-West of China next to the borders with Mongolia & Kazakhstan is a multicultural melting pot of Han Chinese, Uyghurs (the local Muslim people) and Kazakhs.
