|
Most schoolchildren in Ethiopia begin learning English at the age of six, and a fluent command of the language is neccessary for students to enter higher education or to find a job with one of Addis Ababa's many international employers. Ethiopia needs an educated and ambitious younger generation who can take the country forward. Teaching English is especially important here, since after grade seven (age 14), all subjects are taught in English. It is vital that all children receive a good grounding in English from an early age; if their English is poor, children can struggle and drop out of school. Volunteers usually work in schools with children between the ages of 10 and 16. You will make an important contribution by improving students' spoken English and giving them the confidence that comes from being able to communicate with a native speaker. Let us know if you would like to assist with any extra-curricular activities, such as drama groups or sports coacing.
