Program description:

China is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. As this ancient nation emerges as the front runner in global economic development, there is wide spread interest in its economics, its culture, its history, and Chinese every day life. As it has been only twenty-five years since China opened up to the outside world, there are many misconceptions and much false information concerning the country.

¡¡A tour to some of the best known treasures of ancient Chinese culture and history can satisfy one¡¯s curiosity about the wonders here, but it seldom touches on the real economic, social, or political life of the people.

¡¡China is a large country. Most of the eastern coastal area of China is intensely developed and resembles much of the rest of the industrialized world. China¡¯s vast western area is made up of great prairies, deserts, and huge mountain masses. In between these two areas are less developed but much more fertile lands, and the best known of these is Sichuan Province. It is a rich agricultural area, where much of China¡¯s history was played out. On its west the province is bordered by the Himalayan Mountains. One of China¡¯s two great rivers, the Yangtze, flows through it. Its capital, Chengdu, lies in the middle of the province, with a metropolitan population of twelve to fourteen million. Despite the number, Chengdu is noted among major Chinese cities as being laidback. Teahouses, mahjong, and hot spicy Sichuan cuisine are its most popular features.

¡¡An alternative to touring China, if one is more interested in the people of China than its famous landmarks, are two programs involving Internship and Homestay.

The first program, Business, Culture, and Homestay (BCH) is eight weeks long, during which time the participant lives with a Chinese family and works in a Chinese company. The program can also involves introductions to the Chinese language, Kung Fu, Chinese Calligraphy, and traditional Chinese painting. The second program, Intensive Language and Internship (ILI), is four weeks long.
