Program description:

Volunteer in Tanzania, the Land of the Serengeti. Teach English in local schools, work with orphaned children, teach English and cooking at a vocational school and work with a women's group. Tanzania's local schools have a dire need for teachers fluent in English. As the language of commerce in the region and one of the official languages of the country, the importance of English grows daily. In the Volunteer Tanzania English Teaching project, volunteers will contribute their time and energy working with children of all ages, teaching them basic and conversational English. Games, drawing, and other creative activities are helpful additions to the school day. Other subjects can also be taught if you have knowledge or experience in other areas. There is a range of teaching abroad opportunities in Tanzania ranging from pre-schools and primary (elementary) schools to high schools and colleges.

This volunteer opportunity in Tanzania provides the chance of a lifetime to make an impact on the future success of these children. They are hungry for knowledge - feed that hunger, and watch them grow!

Before or after your volunteering program, join the Tanzania mini-adventure program, or learn more about Tanzania through a 2 week Language and Culture program.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

Teach English at Local Schools:

Work with Orphaned Children:

Touch a life - make a difference - love a child! Do all this and more in Global Crossroad's Tanzania Orphanage Project. Our partner orphanage center cares for orphans from the Mbeya municipality and neighboring areas. These children need love, attention, care - and a little help with their English and their homework! Volunteers in this Tanzania project will help prepare the children for school in the morning and assist them with their homework and practice their English in the afternoons after school, along with leading them in games and activities. Volunteers will also help prepare meals, wash clothes and dishes, and perform other tasks around the orphanage during the day.

This Tanzania volunteer project also allows you the chance to work proactively in the orphanage's community outreach program. This program works to identify orphaned children in the community and provide the shelter and care they need to prevent them from growing up alone and on the streets.

Teach English and Cooking at a Vocational School:

The practicalities of working and making a living can be very difficult in developing countries. Our partner institute in Mbeya provides classes in hotel operation, management, and tourism, addressing the real need for practical vocational education. Through this Volunteer Tanzania project, volunteers have the opportunity to further the vocational education of Tanzanians attending this school.

Most volunteers for this project will be teaching English. In addition, if you can cook dishes from your native country, bring the recipes and pass this skill on to the students! Learning to prepare meals from many different countries will give these students a real advantage in their future careers in the hospitality industry!

Assist the Bamboo Women's Group:Poverty and unemployment threaten Africa more than any other part of the world, leaving working mothers and their children far behind. However, this group of women has taken their futures into their own hands and banded together to begin their own small business making baskets, chairs, lamp shades, and other products out of bamboo. The only goal of this women's group is to make a little money to support their families and send their children to school. Through this Volunteer Tanzania project, you can help this group ensure their continued success by helping them develop the marketing skills they need to promote their business. Volunteers will also help the women turn the raw bamboo into the beautiful finished pieces.

Volunteer in Tanzania to help these women take an equal place in this strongly male-oriented society, and help them develop the skills they need to maintain that place in the future. Working with women is rewarding as it offers more opportunities to interact with the local women than any other project. The mothers will be extremely grateful for any help that you could offer.

MINI ADVENTURE PROGRAM:

Venture deep into the plateau of East Africa, meet smiling, friendly people in tiny villages nearly untouched by modern life, or tour the busy city of Dar Es Salaam. Joining our mini-adventure volunteer program in Tanzania offers you a rare insider’s view of one of the most colorful countries of Africa. For volunteers who would love to catch more than just a glimpse of African wildlife and experience the sights, sounds, and memories of the land of the Serengeti, the mini-adventure program is ideal.

Beginning with a tour of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city and commercial center – and home of some of the best beaches in the world – this program also includes a 2-day safari across Mikumi National Park, and two more days exploring the historically and geographically significant city of Iringa. The program ends with 6 days of volunteer work in Tanzania at a local orphanage.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM (2 WEEKS):

Our carefully designed Tanzania language and cultural training offers glimpses of the local languages, cultures, religions, and ways of local life before beginning your volunteer project. The program consists of language training, cultural visits, language practice, and orientation to the local culture. Also included in the language program are a village stay, hiking, exploration of local tourist areas, and work on local farms. Participants also get a taste of what it is like to live with an East African family. The language will normally be what is spoken in the locality of your placement - currently the main language taught is Swahili.
