Program description:

The Mélida Anaya Montes English School is looking for volunteers who want to teach English in San Salvador, El Salvador.  The school is dedicated to teaching English within a context that facilitates growth as human beings and contributes to the movement for social justice in El Salvador and the world.

Our Requirements

*Election volunteers must be able to speak Spanish conversationally.

*English teachers must speak English as if it were their first language.  We recommend that our volunteers participate in our Spanish classes to improve their language ability or to familiarize themselves with Salvadoran Spanish.

*Volunteers usually must make a commitment of at least 10 weeks (9-week English School cycle and teacher orientation prior to the cycle).  

*Volunteers must be culturally sensitive and interested in issues of social justice.

How long does the program last?: 3-6 months
What are the dates of this program: We have 4 English cycles that are 9 weeks in length throughout the year. Volunteers must be able to commit to teaching for the complete 9 week cycle. Specific dates can be found on our webpage.

Concrete Benefits include the following:

*Half-price Spanish classes to our English teachers when there is another student in the volunteer's class.

*Training provided for teaching English as a Foreign Language and Popular Education methodology

*2 weeks of an intensive political-cultural program to learn more about El Salvador.  Half-price participation in the Spanish school's political-cultural program after the intial 2 weeks ($15/week).  *Participation in several weekend excursions to various points of historical and cultural interest in El Salvador throughout the English cycle.

*Assistance in finding housing, including living with a Salvadoran family. (Monthly living expenses run from US $280-$400)



Cost or price of this program:

Volunteers must pay for their own expenses, including room and board and transportation.   English Teachers are also required to pay a $100 program fee, which will cover the cost of some in-country transportation for excursions.

Qualifications required:

English teachers must be fluent in English.
