Program description:

Volunteer in South Africa by teaching English, working in an orphanage, on a health project, in HIV/AIDS education, by working in a zoo, volunteer with eco-tourism, work in a zoo, and get involved with conservation work in protected areas. Before or after your volunteering program, learn about South Africa through a two week Culture and Language program. Or combine working with orphans with a South African adventure on the Mini-Adventure Program.

South Africa relies on English for business and government, since English is one of the country's official languages. Unfortunately, many South Africans only get the opportunity to learn the language from their fellow South Africans. This South Africa volunteer project aims to change that fact. In the teaching English in South Africa project, volunteers will either lead or assist in a classroom teaching English to middle or high school children. Schools may be private, public, or informal, but in all cases English teaching focuses on conversational English rather than formal grammar. The student age ranges between 11 and 16 years.

Schools are very helpful to the novice teacher (or even to experienced ones!), and provide many resources to help you plan and carry out your school day. Textbooks, teaching guides, and help preparing lesson plans are all available to support you while you teach in South Africa.

South Africa has 4 academic terms a year: January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December; a minimum commitment of 2 months is required to volunteer for the Teaching English in South Africa project.

Placements are available in both the Johannesburg and Cape Town areas.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES:

Teach English:

Work in Orphanages:

An orphanage can seem a sad place. But for some South African children, an orphanage offers a refuge from the harsh conditions of the streets and a place to laugh, to learn, to grow - to experience the childhood they never really had before. Volunteer efforts in this project help to offer education, love, and friendship they lacked living on the streets.

The exact job responsibilities of orphanage volunteers in South Africa depend on the needs of the individual orphanage as well as the skills and interests of the volunteers. However, volunteers normally teach basic English to the children, and also help to develop creative programs such as art, music, dance, and sports. Additional help such as in accompanying the children on day trips and help with sanitation, cooking, and administration might also be requested.

Health Project:

In South Africa, health care conditions vary sharply among large cities and rural areas. While large cities boast state-of-the-art facilities for health care, rural areas have health services which could be, in terms of services and facilities available, termed egregious. Most rural hospitals are understaffed and overcrowded, and health clinics always need more help. In this South Africa volunteer project, you can make the difference for these patients! Qualified volunteer help in the health care field is always hard to come by, and always badly needed. Volunteers will assist the local doctors and nurses at a clinic or hospital caring for patients, performing first aid, handing out food or medicines, taking temperatures, and blood pressures, and taking patients' medical histories. Volunteers may handle paperwork or do other tasks for the doctor as well.

Many hospitals also work in coordination with the local communities, presenting different programs on health education, basic prevention, nutrition, and sanitation. Volunteer assistance is extremely helpful in such programs. Such health projects offer a wonderful opportunity for volunteers and students to be acquainted with the existing health issues and challenges of delivering health care in developing countries.

HIV/AIDS Education:

AIDS - a tragic disease and voracious killer in Africa. In spite of efforts aimed at preventing the spread of this devastating disease, the rate of HIV infection is still rising in many African countries. Added to the poverty and malnutrition already rampant in much of Africa, AIDS is crippling the lives and economies of many nations on the continent, and South Africa is no exception. The need for action now is urgent.

The HIV/AIDS education and awareness volunteer project in South Africa is designed to increase the awareness and knowledge of South Africans about the disease and how it spreads. Therefore, volunteers in the HIV/AIDS South Africa project will mainly be involved in educational and training activities meant to increase awareness and stop the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Volunteers will be working closely with local organizations who have established various community outreach programs and organize educational seminars and conferences on the virus within the local community.

Work in a Zoo:Wonderful zoos in South Africa need volunteers to help with the daily care of these unique creatures. Biologists, veterinarians, and other volunteers are welcomed to this beautiful facility, which houses wonderful tropical animals from the area, as well as animals from other latitudes. Become a part of the conservation work that this zoo carries on.

In this South Africa volunteer project, a lot of work and a lot of help is required, ranging from cleaning to feeding and other care for the animals. Working in the zoo is the perfect opportunity to show your love for African wildlife and increase your intimacy with the beautiful creatures who share our planet.

Eco-Tourism Projects:

Located in Johannesburg and Cape Town, these South Africa volunteer eco-tourism projects are designed to attract more tourists by protecting the existing forests and wildlife of Knysna, Tsitsikama forests in the Cape region, and Mpumalanga forest North of Johannesburg, and developing butterfly gardens, youth training centers, computer centers, bee farming, and biological centers.

This project also focuses on local cultures, wilderness adventures, personal growth, and learning new ways to live on our vulnerable planet. Volunteering in South Africa for this project involves helping to minimize the adverse effects of traditional tourism on the natural environment and enhance the cultural integrity of the local people.

As a conservation volunteer in South Africa, you will upgrade the existing facilities and help develop creative eco-tourism related projects. Work includes gardening around the lodge, making signs for the already existing trails, helping with the construction of a classroom for the environmental education program, making new cages for the snakes, establishing a butterfly garden, and participating in related project jobs.

Conservation Work in Protected Areas:Protecting the wonderful natural features of South Africa is only possible if conservation work starts at the grass roots level. In this South Africa volunteer project, volunteers choose one of four Protected Areas to work on different conservation projects.

As conservation volunteers in South Africa, you will upgrade the existing facilities and help develop creative eco-tourism related projects. The primary job of the volunteers will be to maintain and improve the facilities of the projects, help in constructing trails, cleaning the areas, and helping and guiding the tourists. Participants will live in the Rangers' houses, and all meals are included.

CULTURE AND LANGUAGE PROGRAM (2 WEEKS):

Start your South Africa volunteer experience with the language and cultural immersion program! Spend time with inhabitants whose mystical culture has remained intact since time immemorial! Yes, the program in South Africa starts from a town known as Lesedi Village in the province of Guateng, whose inhabitants remain steeped in a culture which hasn't changed in centuries! During the first week of orientation, you will attend basic Zulu or Xhosa classes and explore the culture, history, life, and wonders of Lesedi and other nearby villages. Global Crossroad also organizes a one-day guided tour to explore the richness of Phumamngena Safari Ranch. In the second week, explore the beauty of South African villages, and come to know intimately the ways of life there while practicing your language lessons.

MINI ADVENTURE PROGRAM:

Join this wonderful 2 week mini-volunteer/adventure in South Africa and wander through a land of extraordinary beauty, mystery, and adventure. Also explore South Africa's incredibly diverse cultures, languages, and religions as you examine the country's rich past, exciting future, wonderful culture, and natural beauty. This mini-volunteer in South Africa program combines work in an orphanage with four days of adventure which takes you to cultural and tourist wonders, and the spectacular scenery and wildlife of South Africa when you visit the bustling capital of Johannesburg, the Rhino and Lions Park, and the vibrant markets in Boksburg and East Rand Mall. Wherever you go, you feel the country's rich cultural heritage, fascinating contrasts, and warm welcoming people.

Our volunteer in South Africa program offers volunteers the opportunity to explore the great land of South Africa while working for South African children and people through projects focused on teaching, orphanage help, health issues, and other community development projects.
