|
SPW Nepal takes a unique, youth-centred approach to Nepal’s development. We mobilize the vast resource of educated and committed young Nepali and International volunteers to spearhead development where it is most needed through transferring knowledge and skills to rural young people and their communities. In this process, we address some of the major issues affecting Nepali youth, while bringing Nepal’s young majority to a realisation of their capacity to be the change they want to see.
Volunteers receive a one month training course, which includes local language classes, cross-cultural awareness training, team building skills and how to use sport, drama and music to communicate development issues, before being dispatched to deprived rural schools with a Nepali counterpart on an intensive seven month intervention. You will live with a local host family and work on a purely voluntary basis to catalyze change among rural school students and the wider rural community.
SPW Nepal is one of seven registered country programmes promoting a youth-for-development model across Africa and Asia.
We facilitate this through a unique model of 'Youth Animation' that involves mobilizing educated young adults in Nepal (aged 18-25) to transfer knowledge and skills to young people in rural areas, thereby bringing each to an awareness of their potential to make things happen.
Rather than just dipping a toe into a different culture, volunteers become totally immersed in it as they live and work with local volunteers in rural communities, possibly miles from another international volunteer. They become part of community life and get to know families, schools and local customs.
We believe young people are best placed to deliver programmes because rural youth will relate to them better than experts, teachers or parents, but we also know that our volunteers need training, guidance and support to fulfil your potential.

You will also discover skills in yourself that you never knew existed and that you can take with you throughout your life. You will also gain practical and specific skills that along with your experience creates a wonderful stepping stone into a career in international development.
You will get full comprehensive support in Nepal and the UK. You will receive a full pre-departure briefing, 1 months training in country and a debrief on your return. We'll keep you up to date with developments in country, organise reunions, provide you with career advice and workshops. We have an ex-volunteer network who are very active in campaigns such as Stop AIDS Campaign and Make Poverty History.
Not just an opportunity to experience another culture, but become completely immersed in one. The partnership with a local counterpart gives invaluable support and advice and bridges the gap between you and your community, helping you understand the culture and customs surrounding you. Living and working with local volunteers will create sister/brother relationships and friendships for life. You grow close to and become an integral part of the community and get huge satisfaction from helping their communities.
Volunteers remain a part of people’s lives long after they leave their placement, through memories, letters, phone calls and visits, not only this, volunteers are a part of a longer term commitment to development.
Volunteers have an opportunity to visit places of interest. Volunteers can re-discover themselves and learn true values of life. They come home with amazing memories and knowledge, proactive and wiling to stay involved and tackle the challenges of worldwide issues, such as poverty, women’s rights, world debt and fair trade.

Approx. £3300. This includes open return flight, work permit, fully comprehensive travel insurance, 4 weeks in country training, support in country & UK - including fundraising advice, food, accommodation and a local allowance.
