Program description: |

Volunteer in nurseries or child centers (2-6 years old), at primary schools (ages 6-12), at secondary schools (ages 12-18), at a sports school, vocational school, or a non formal school. There are two types of schools in Thailand; government and private. Our teaching program is mainly with government-funded schools. These schools are fully government supported. Teachers are regarded as government officers and usually have very good reputation in the society. Students also respect them very much. They stand up every time you enter the classroom and say, Good morning/afternoon, teacher! It is common that students WAI, a Thai way of showing respect to superiors, even if they meet teachers on the way, or in the market.
All the schools have semester system. First semester starts from mid-May remains until the end of September or the first week of October. The second semester starts from first week of November until March. It is good to avoid holiday period in school, however, if you can not find the suitable time, then we can organize extra classes in Secondary schools or you can work in child development centers which are normally open all year round.
Thai students start to learn English from Grade 1; however, it is difficult to find high school students who speak fair English. English courses are designed focusing mainly on grammatical work. Students, in general, shy to speak English due to lack of confidence. However, they are eager to learn and eager to try with native speakers. Those who speak also not original English, you need to correct the pronunciation of many words. You have to assess the level of English first before you start teaching, then you can make your mind what to teach and from which level to start. Teaching is, therefore, very flexible and simple. You will be teaching practical conversational English using your own skill or talent e.g. by telling story, playing games, performing drama etc. whatever way you like. The supervisor at school assigned helps to develop the lessons. You will work 3-4 hours a day during weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 8 am and 4 pm.
Information given below can be of your help to understand about the school system or the academic institutions in Thailand. You choose the suitable type of school or the level/age of the students, subjects (language, sports, mathematics, business etc.) and the time period, you want to teach. We try our best to find the suitable placement for you.
Nurseries or child centers (2-6 years old)
There are several hundred of these Day Care Centers in Thailand especially nearby cities and factory areas. These are normally attached with primary schools and run either by local government, communities, temples or foundations. The age of the children ranges from 2-6 years. These child centers are to provide services to the poor families who have low-paid job (mostly factory workers) and can't afford to hire nannies for their children or send them to private nurseries. Their parents drop them before they go to work and pick them up after office work. You can teach them to speak and write, walk and run, sing songs, play sports and fun games, shape clays, dance but fully depends on your plan. These activities have been very suitable for those young volunteers who did not have prior experience of teaching or child care at all. In many cases, we provide/donate teaching and playing materials to the schools for these activities with these kids.
Primary schools - grade 1 to 6 (6-12 years old):
These are government schools usually located in the peri-urban and the rural areas. They are very beginners of English. But enjoy learning English in the class as well as while playing. Some schools have expanded educational services up to grade 9 because of compulsory extension up to 15 years. It is suitable for those who want to teach medium aged children.
Secondary schools
Grade 7 to 12 (students of 12-18 years): All the schools in Thailand have the foreign language department that offers mainly English and then other languages such as French and German. Although students are relatively older, their spoken English may not be so good. At the moment, our programs are in Angthong, Chainat, Nakhon Nayok, Ayuthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Pathumthani, Saraburi, Nongkhai, Lopburi and Korat but we are expanding to other provinces of Thailand.
Sport Schools
Volunteers teach English as well as sports in Sports Schools which have facilities for many types of sports e.g. football, basket ball, volleyball, badminton, Thai boxing, sepak Takraw etc. This type of school is not common. There are few schools, one in each region, which produce or train national players. Students interested in building career in sports from all over Thailand go to study there. They received special scholarship and on-campus accommodation. Our volunteers can teach conversational English. They get good opportunity while they play and coach them.
Vocational colleges
Grades equivalent to 9-12 or higher (15 years up). This type of schools offer short course training, and help young people find early employment. Offered courses include sewing, electronics, mechanics, crafting, and business administration.
Non-formal schools
These types of schools are fully government funded to help local people. Schools organize those subjects under the curriculum set for the primary and secondary levels. Depending upon the availability of resource person(s) or the teachers, other subjects are also offered during certain time of a year. The age of the students is usually about 15 yrs and up but can be even of their 60s. This program helps those people who didn't get opportunity to continue their studies in ordinary schools but had to start working to support their families. There are large the mature students who understand the value of spoken English; therefore, they want to practice with native speakers or someone who speak fluent English. Classes are organized either at the school center or in different communities.

A tropical nation in the heart of Southeast Asia, Thailand is an exotic land full of mountains, plains, beaches, and forests. With such a vast array of lands to explore, the beautiful Thailand appears almost like a kaleidoscope of different worlds mixed together. Here, a traveler can choose to relax on the white sandy beaches, delve into the lush jungles, or even experience the city life of the busy, cultural garden of Bangkok. And Thailand, a nation far from the customs and cultures of the western world, is a very friendly place for visitors. The natives are kind, the activities are countless, and the food is extraordinary. Whether you go for the unique culture, sights, or tastes, Thailand offers something for everyone. Our volunteer in Thailand program offers opportunities to involve in Thai culture, encounter friendly townsfolk, support local people, and take part in a new, exciting way of life that includes visiting a local family's rubber processing farm and cooking traditional Thai cuisine. After that, dabble in some herbal medical techniques complete with invigorating massage therapy, or even take part in a short-term temple stay in one of the beautifully ornate temples.
