Program description: |
 |
|
In 2001, the SPW South Africa Health Education Programme took a dramatic step and changed from being a school-based to a community-based programme. The new programme provides an exciting challenge to volunteers, enabling them to work effectively will all segments of the community, both in and out of schools, and with other community based structures (youth clubs, sports teams, etc.)
Volunteers concentrate on raising awareness about important health issues such as adolescent reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, sanitation, nutrition and environmental issues that have an impact on health. Acting as Change Agents and peer educators, volunteers use a variety of non-formal techniques such as games and activities to present these sensitive issues to young people and to encourage them to take action.
These non-formal activities help to develop the life skills that young people need in order to take control and implement change in their lives, such as leadership, critical thinking, self esteem and self confidence.
SPW volunteers also raise awareness on a range of local and global issues. Volunteers transfer skills and knowledge, enabling community members to analyse and tackle local problems. Work centres around leadership and life skills, the sustainable networking of youth groups, promotion of human rights and gender equality, local volunteers' empowerment and behavioural change in health and sanitation. Many volunteers are involved in establishing Youth Councils in their communities, ensuring that the voice of the youth is recognized and respected by the broader community.

|
Training - you will receive 3 weeks intensive training at the start of the programme. After working in your community for one month, you get a further 10 days training to plan your activities for the rest of the year.
Influencing others - volunteers are in a position to empower youth in South Africa and give them the knowledge and skills to help them lead a successful and safe life.
Skills - You will also discover skills in yourself that you never knew existed and that you can take with you throughout your life.
Experience a partnership - The partnership with a local counterpart gives invaluable support and advice and bridges the gap between you and your community, helping you understand the culture and customs surrounding you. Living and working with local volunteers will create sister/brother relationships and friendships for life. Many of our past volunteers are still in touch with their partners many years on.
A cultural experience - Not just an opportunity to experience another culture, but you will become completely immersed in one. You grow close to and become an integral part of the community and get huge satisfaction from helping your community.
Support in-country and at home - You will get fully comprehensive support in the country and the UK. You will receive a full pre-departure briefing, 1 months training in country and a debrief on your return. We'll keep you up to date with developments in country, organise reunions, provide you with career advice and workshops. We have an ex-volunteer network who are very active in campaigns such as Stop AIDS Campaign and Make Poverty History.
Staying power - Volunteers remain a part of people’s lives long after they leave their placement, through memories, letters, phone calls and visits, not only this, volunteers are a part of a longer term commitment to development.
Future career prospects - Volunteering with SPW is an excellent stepping stone into a career in the development sector.
Travel - Volunteers have an opportunity to visit places of interest.
A journey of self-discovery - Volunteers can re-discover themselves and learn true values of life. They come home with amazing memories and knowledge, proactive and wiling to stay involved and tackle the challenges of worldwide issues, such as poverty, women’s rights, world debt and fair trade.
