Program description:

VFP is a non-profit organization that offers placement in over 2800 volunteer projects in more than 90 countries. VFP helps organize 40-60 projects in the United States each year. We exchange volunteers with our international partners, who organize similar projects in their own countries. Our office places volunteers mostly from the US and Canada. If you are from another country, please let me know and I´ll send you information to help you participate.

Our goal is to foster intercultural education and community service by providing a realistic way for people from diverse backgrounds to work together to help overcome the need, violence and environmental problems facing our planet. Most projects have volunteers from five or more countries participating.

There are many different types of work available, including construction, renovation, environmental, social, arts, and peace programs. Most programs are from 2-3 weeks long, and require a $250 registration fee, payable to VFP. The registration fee covers food, accommodations and work materials for the duration of the program. Accommodations vary widely, but usually volunteers share the same living space, doing all their own cleaning and food preparation.

Projects taking place in the developing world often require an additional fee payable to our partners upon arrival. In such cases, VFP usually refunds $75 with any feedback that you send us. Volunteers must arrange and pay for their own transportation. About 25% of our volunteers register for two or more programs in the same or different countries.

Most of the projects take place in the summer, and registrations take place between late March and June for the following five months (June-Oct), but there are some projects available all year long.

The complete 2005 Directory, including the summer programs, is now viewable only by paid VFP members until April 15th when it will become viewable to the general public. Please consider becoming a member now to get the best choice of camps.

As a guide for the entire year 2005, you can view our ALL CAMPS 2004 Directory (just scroll down on the Directory page to access that version).....programs are similar from year to year.

Volunteers simply register (this is not an application process) for the workcamps of their choice from the Directory in order of their preference, by completing and faxing (much quicker) or sending (snail mail) their registration form to VFP. Payment can be made by credit card or check in US dollars. You can print the VFP registration form from our website by clicking the link entitled "Camp Registration" on our home page. You can search our "SEARCHABLE" Directory to find the programs of your choice within the time frame of your availability. The Directory lets you  select specific fields such as country, date  range, camp type or keyword to assist your searching. You have the option of searching an optional country or camp type at the same time. When the output appears from your selected parameters, you can further sort the output columns that are presented by starting and ending date, country, ages, camp type and open spaces for female and male volunteers ....just click the underlined heading of that column.  There is also a separate option to list the programs open for any specific country by clicking the link entitled  "Printable Camp List by Country". To print the output, you will need to select FILE in the upper left hand corner of your browser and then PRINT. On all searches, ONLY OPEN CAMPS WILL APPEAR. Again, the Directory contains many edits and additional camps  which may not appear in the printed copy.

As an internship via VFP, you can register for multiple programs in the same or different countries and extend your stay to 3-6 months or more....or enroll in an MTV (medium-term volunteer-3-6 months) or LTV (long-term volunteer-6 months to a year). These MTV and LTV programs are listed in our searchable Directory online by selecting MTV or LTV as a program "type" and setting the date fields "from" TODAY´S DATE "to" 31-Dec-05. Since MTV and LTV positions usually have no fixed dates, you have to set the date parameters as described above in order to find those programs in our online database. Alternatively, you can view ALL the MTV and LTV programs available by clicking the button so indicated at the bottom of the Open Camp Search page. The output page can be further sorted for any column that has an underline simply by clicking that column´s header.

You MUST become a VFP member in order to register for workcamps. If you register for a program, you can also pay your VFP membership at the same time. Your $20 contribution includes the printed version of the International Workcamp Directory (289pp published in early April each year) sent by first-class mail. You will also receive our Newsletter next January.

You can join VFP online with your credit card at our website or fax us your membership information on the fax order form provided. If you prefer to send us a check, there is a membership form in the newsletter we will send you today. You can also call our office at any time to order by phone since there is no risk in leaving your credit card information on our answering machine.

Feel free to let us know if you have any questions. Thanks for your interest!

Benefits and advantages of the program:

International Workcamps are a short-term form of international voluntary service that emerged from war-torn Europe back in 1920. They are an affordable (most programs are US$250 for a 2-3 week program) and meaningful way that you can travel, live and work in a foreign country.

Intercultural immersion, communicating and adapting is what the programs are all about. They are a way you can respond positively to the many challenges facing our planet by getting to know people and working with them to improve their lives in some tangible way. For many, they are a good way to "test the waters" of international service with a great variety of programs worldwide.

Because volunteers at each site usually come from four or more countries, you’ll have a blast, building bonds with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. You’ll learn a lot about one another, yourself and about some of the social, cultural and political conditions that exist in other countries. Discussions on issues of common concern, free-time activities and local excursions are an integral part of every workcamp.

It may seem incredible that, through VFP, you can live in a foreign country for 2-3 weeks for as little as $250.  The registration fee, which you pay to VFP, is used in part to help cover the costs of hosting and insuring foreign volunteers in the US. Likewise foreign volunteers pay a registration fee to their local organizations. VFP then works with its partner organizations and exchanges volunteers like you. Camp costs in all countries are low because housing is simple and often donated and the volunteers prepare their own meals. VFP also strives to keep administrative costs low. Our placement fees have not increased since year 2000.
